Title: Dyson DC25 Stripdown and Refurb
Post by: beko1987 on October 16, 2013, 03:58:25 pm
Thought I'd post this up here incase it is of any interest. Got a DC24, 25 and 04 recently for free, bloke's missus had killed them all and he wanted them out of the garage.

With this being the newest dyson I have worked on, I took lots of pictures of the process, to hopefully aid me when putting it back together!

But, if any of the pictures help out then great! This machine runs and the brushroll spins. It needs a new wand, a few spring buttons, a brushroll and filters but I;m waiting until its back together and working well before shelling out for that.

So...

Side by side with my DC24 Cyclone (the 25 is a test run for stripping and refurbing the much smaller and fiddly looking 24...)

And that's it for now! Have started re-assembling the brushroll, but spent half an hour last night working out what goes where, so hopefully should progress once my lovely daughter goes to bed tonight!

Thanks! I had noticed a lack of proper teardown threads, and since I was stripping it down anyway thought I should post my findings!

She is back together now. Not as many pictures, mainly because I was scrolling back through them on my phone to work out what goes where, but it wasn't too bad, just fiddly, and trying parts in 2 or 3 different orders until it made sense and went back together.

Motor and wiring back into the floorhead. Put a few drops of oil on the motor bearings in the hope it soaks in and prolongs its life a bit!

Annoyingly the bearing housing end of the brushroll baseplate had cracked. A bit of glue capillaried into the cracks seems to have sorted it.

No idea if it works or not yet, was half 11 when I finished last nigth, and my daughter would have woken up as soon as I turned it on, then the missus would have woken up as well and that's not a good move!

Providing it all works as it should, I can get on with buying the bits it needs:

Wand assembly
New Brushroll
New Filters
Wand end cap
The button and spring that fits onto the end of the hose to clip into the wand/onto the tools

Will test drive it later when I get home from work and see if I've improved it, or if it's still fit for the scrap pile!

What a coincidence, I've been watching that one! Just bought it too, along with a wand and end cap, and brushroll. New filters makethe total spend quite high, so will leave that for now until I get paid.

The good news is she's good as new! Just run it round the flat and the suction us restored, it's smooth in its operation and it all works!

The Brushroll is fine in use, no odd noises but I will replace anyway as the locating mouldings are worn down and some bristles are missing. It's also annoying to use atm as the wand doesn't secure down.

Got a quick video uploading to YouTube, will post it up when finished!

The wand turned up today, so I swapped them round, and then took the broken one apart.

Broken one is on the bottom

The new one worked, but was a bit tough to work. Decided to strip the old one apart and see how it works

Flick the 3 metal tabs out

The plastic end comes out

Bend the tabs back flush, and the pipe withdraws from the top of the wand

Push the two plastic tabs in, and pop/pull the grey bit of plastic out. The clear piece of plastic sits inbetween the grey bit with tabs and the handle housing, and un-locks the wand from the cleaner (this was what was broken on it)

The half piece of clear plastic sits inside the plastic shown. Not sure what role it plays

This is whats left. It locates the metal pole and keeps everything straight. I removed the screw but couldnt get it out, so left it

This little chappie sits right at the top. When you pull the red end of the pole up to extend it, it unclips this on the way

The two trim bits come off as well

The 'new' assembly was in worse condition than the old

I then put the whole thing back together. Didn't really do anything special, but once back together, I thought I should try it on the cleaner one last time...

and it clicked down and locked on correctly

and the pole extended and retracted smoothly and more easily than the new assembly...

Basically I had fixed it. So I swapped the end cap onto the old handle, and left it on! Now got a spare handle which I will probably take apart, put back together and see if it improves and either put it in the garage as a spare or back onto ebay with it!

Thanks to the good service of ManchesterVacs, I was able to complete the DC25 just now (come home from work feeling rotten but couldnt resist fitting the parts...)

It's either been abused or the brushrolls aren't what they used to be...

Looks much smarter now

And the finished machine (and the sale pictures...)

So, there you go (if anyones still reading this). Newer Dysons are strippable, but it's alot harder work than the older ones. The 25 works well now, grooms the carpet better than it did (not a patch on a Hoover Turbopower though...), has very strong suction, a nice handle arrangement and looks the part too. And to think, it was being taken to the tip if I didn't have them, and now it's good as new, apart from the obvious cosmetics of a used vac.

I hope these pictures help anyone else looking to troubleshoot a repair on their DC25.

Now, I must get round to the DC24 and DC16 that need doing... (and an early DC04 Absolute+, but I think that is too far gone to be worth it)

Thanks for posting the complete stripdown. I will probably need it when I put my Dyson DC25 back together. The motor on mine quit working, so when I took it apart 7 pennys fell out of the motor. Those pennys ripped some of the fan apart and torn away some of the plastic. Would anyone know how a bunch of pennys would have gotten sucked into the motor? Also the cleaner head does not turn. I put the cleaner head on my working DC25 and still does not work. Other than the cleaner motor being bad, any other ideas. Here is a picture of the motor and what the pennys did to it.

Oof that's a lot of damage! There must be a design flaw somewhere to allow such bits into the motor! Impressive though, and a novel way of turning 6p into 40 notes!

Does the pcb on the head look burnt? Since you have tried it on a machine you know work it sounds a bit suspect, does your working head work on both machines?
Title: Re: Dyson DC25 Stripdown and Refurb
Post by: stpopken on October 25, 2013, 09:42:50 pm
No nothing looked burnt. When i cleaned out the clear head, there was some black dirt, which could have been caused by someting burning. And yes the working head did good on both before i took the bad one apart. Could the bad ball motor cause the cleaner head go bad. The reason i ask is when i put the good cleaner head on the bad machine, it seemed to want to hesitate on/off like it was ready to stop.
Title: Re: Dyson DC25 Stripdown and Refurb
Post by: beko1987 on October 25, 2013, 09:46:48 pm
The two motors are seperate, I had a dc24 with a broken motor and the Brushroll was fine. Check the wiring to the head, and check the little switch that sits under the side cover, this turns it on and off as the cleaner stands and reclines. There's also a little microswitch under the main switches, check that too.

Just unplugging and replugging everything may kick it into life.

Is it possible the black powder could be the remains of the carbon brushes in the Brushroll motor? If so then  :dead-dyson: cleaner head

Well, after an ad on Gumtree came through, the DC25 sold to a nice lady who has swapped their 1 bed flat for a 3 bed house due to an impending baby, and their DC26 just can't cope.

She got a bargain at £80 for the machine, and is very happy. I advised her to turn the brushroll off for hard floors to prevent it going bang as they do, and showed her how to wash the filters!

Have learnt alot about DC25's. In future (unless they are free, not fussed then) I will ensure that the wand fully works, as well as both motors. Everything else is just a case of remove, strip, clean and re-assemble.

And I can tick a DC25 off my 'machines I have not owned' list.

Beko1987

I have a Dyson DC25 animal almost from the beginning I have not be able to get the wand to separate from the body. The wand pulls up almost of the way but will not release the handle from the body. I have followed Dyson's video but the hose is not twisted. I have tried everything to get the handle separated from the body but I can't figure out what is holding it together. Since I can't get the handle free from the body I can't take it apart to see what is locking it together. In your pictures you show a clear plastic part that you say locks it. Do you have any idea how to get the handle apart from the body so that I can take it apart to see what is broken?

Oh dear, are you sitting comfortably?  :snivel:

This one was like that when I got it.

Step 1 - you need a torch, 2 x long thin flathead screwdrivers and a partner.

Step 2 - Release the hose from the bottom of the machine, pull the wand out as far as it will go and remove the hose. Take the cyclone off and pop the tab back and pull the lower cord hook up.

Step 3 - Pop the grey plastic insert out from the top of the metal pole. I found that one side popped out, then doing the alternative side popped it back in again. Swearing is encouraged at this point... It will come off, and slidedown to the bottom.

Step 4 - Peer up from underneath into the now visible void where the hose sat. You should see the clear plastic ring up there. Basically that has moved, and now jammed.

Step 5 - Try and manipulate the plastic tab back into position. Friend to pull on the wand when you think you nearly have it but really don't. This way didn't work for me, but could do if lucky. Basically, the clear tab pulls up with the bottom of the metal pole and releases the latch. So push in/up with the screwdrivers

Then follow the guide in the post for the stripdown, re-alignment of the plastic tab andre-assembly. However, I found it still did not work as well as the replacement wand I bought, and it did jam again but came apart after a p*ssed off yank. The new wand was £14 second hand, but was a gamble. I'd ask MVacs to sort you out a tidy cheap one with scuffed removable panels (swap them around with yours) and just replace it.

You may get lucky and it will work fine, I think mine had been physically abused as the locking tab for the hose was missing.

Let us know how you get on!

Sam

I finally received my new dc25 ball motor the other day. I just got done installing it, turned it on on and it seemed to work good. The only problem I have now is the roller does not turn. I took my good roller from another dc25 I have and put it on the one I just fixed--it worked just great. So I am thinking the motor in the cleaner head might also be bad.
Is there something I should look for on the cleaner head that might cause it to not work. I used an ohm meter to check continuity between
the wires and all that I checked seemed to be good.
A new cleaner head--what do you think?
Thanks

I've never seen a damaged head so can offer limited help, but do all the capacitors look ok on the circuit board? All the solder joints ok? Is it plugging together properly at the joint?

Failing any of those, or damaged wiring then I;m afraid I don't know!

Just looking at a 25 now, the screw that holds the end cap in place is loose, doesn't seem to click into place, like they usually do and comes out easily. Any idea what might be broken or missing?

If the end cap is OK, may be the brushroll housing (https://manchestervacs.co.uk/Dyson/DC25-Brushroll-Perspex-Housing) is worn.

Hi beko1987,

Great photos of the DC25 in bits. Just a quick question, I have acquired a used DC25 from the 'Great God eBay' and in the process of trying to refurbish/service it. It has an issue with the Red Pedal Assembly. Looking from the back of the DC25, it's the left hand side of the pedal. :'(

This side is floating freely and not secure, I'm guessing this should be secured with a screw. It rest against it's stopper but, once you try and use the pedal it gets stuck in  the mechanism!!.. :angryman: :angryman: Just wondering if I need to purchase a new part ie. a Yoke Locking Arm or whether I can secure in some other way.  >:(

Hi All,

Just finishing off putting my Dyson DC25 back together and seem to be having issues with the Power Switch cover. :'( :'(

Every time I get it back in place, the buttons don't seem to engage!. In the switch assembly, there's only one way for the tiny white plastic arm to fit next to the spring?.. Looking at your strip down pictures, it seems to be the same!!..

Any ideas at all??..

Kind Regards,

Jason

Hi Jason.

I remember having issues, think I got round them by leaving the screws loose and wiggling the assembly until it all lined up. Was a while ago now though, a few other have 25's in bits who may be able to help with a fresher memory!

I've found the attaching the ball back on is really fiddly, especially the wires. Did you manage to get all the wires back in the tracks ? If so what was the easiest way of doing so?

Yes, all the wires went back in but it took a fair few attempts! Get them as per my picture in the main thread, and hopefully when putting it together it should become clear what goes where.

I did swear a bit during it, remember that part well!!

Would charge more than a dc04/7/14 but yes I probably would! Always easier the second time round!

The red plastic piece had come off it's hinges, I had to take off the side and forgot how it went back together. The pictures made all the difference as one of the springs had come off.

Aaah yes,  that spring can be a pain,  especially if its been missing for a while,  the pedal wont flick up and lock the machine up!

Apologies in advance if this is the wrong thread, but it's the first I found from my Google search.

I just got a used DC25 (yellow) off ebay and out of the box the cleaner head seems to not work. I have checked every electrical connection from the power button down to the leads on the brush roll motor, and it all seems fine. The motor is definitely getting power. I was even able to get the motor to run slowly with 2 AAA batteries (3V) and some wires. But for whatever reason, the 10+V coming from the vacuum power dont do squat. Any ideas as to what might be wrong?

Have you checked the loom wires? https://manchestervacs.co.uk/DysonForum/index.php/topic,1670.0.html

Failing that,  have you got a multimeter to be able to test the pcb? Someone will have to remind me of the voltage you should be looking for though.

If the motor works (never thoight to try one witj batteries,  thats a good idea!) then its either the loom as linked or the pcb.

And,  silly question,  have you checked the brushroll button is on,  the one by the main power switch.  You could even bridge the connections under the switch to confirm,  if youve hooked the brushroll motor up to a battery you should be able to do that!

Thanks for your speedy reply. I have checked that power to the brush roll motor is low (a few volts) when the cleaner head button is off, and the voltage increases to around 10V when the cleaner head button is engaged. There are no broken wires along the stretch from the button to the motor (obviously, I guess, but I checked them anyway).

[EDIT] WAIT! I found a broken white wire on that section. Strange, since there was power on both wires coming to the motor. I will fix and confirm it works.

If I remember correctly it should be 220-240v AC out of machine & approximately 330v DC from the PCB to the motor.
Just checked & those are the readings that Mvacs / Dysontech list.

Those readings are for UK machines, for US machines the voltages from the machine would be 110-120v AC.

Success! Sorry for the mysterious post when the culprit was solved long ago. I thought I had checked all the connections from top to bottom but had apparently missed that one. Thanks very much for your help.

Excellent! A solder repair may work,  or a new loom isnt much money.  Its on a pivot point,  so may break again more easily if repaired

If the motor works (never thought to try one with batteries, that's a good idea!)

Better to test the resistance on the motor with a meter. Batteries? Batteries kick out DC (tech will tell me if I am wrong) and while a couple may make it nudge round, you will need 220 of them connected in series to make 330 DC.  :dead-dyson:

Needs £££ spending on it though, and I'm not 100% sure the motor doesn't slow every now and again, so it's at the back of the loft for a rainy day!

Go for it! Their not too bad,  I can get one apart in 25 mins and together in 45 now after doing a few! Just card up your screws as their all different lengths,  and * the ones that need a plastic washer grip thing under them,  saves so much head scratching!

Haha, they're good, but I get bored scrolling and scrolling on long Threads, that's why I make video's and maybe a few photos in my threads.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not knocking you or anyone else... I do like to see repairs and strip downs of course ;)  :tiphat:

No worries,  glad it helped! Did you have an specific issue or just fancied a refurb?

Ive been having thoughts about re doing the refurb tbh,  this was one of my early ones,  and after doing 30-40 of them,  am much better versed.  Reckon I could get 300 pics out of it... Got one in the shed too to refurb and sell...

One day I'll find the time

Wanted to jump in with another huge THANK YOU for posting this teardown.  Found the thread via Google and it was very helpful for me in servicing a DC25.  Spotted the unit out with someone's trash, figured I'd check it out as it would only cost me time to do so.  Obvious problems when I first found it was that the power button plastics were missing as well as the screws that hold the power button cover on, it was missing the combination tool, and it looked like someone had been using it for cleaning up drywall construction.

On testing the motor ran fine but the brush head wasn't rotating.  Got new power switch plastics just so I wasn't reaching down to the actual switches, found some usable screws to hold in place, and got to troubleshooting.

One tip I found for the power brush head, you can connect it directly to mains voltage to test. I took some 14AWG (I think) solid core wire, jammed into the brush head plug, and then ran via a lead to a switchable power strip. Switched on, brush head was working.  So I knew I had a problem somewhere in the loom down to the brush head connection.  This is where the teardown here came in, with it I was comfortable tearing into the lower bits.  Took some head scratching before I found the broken wire, but it was where I expected it to be.  In the area by the connectors where the wires are allowed to flex as the vac is moved up and down, apparently the white wire had snagged on the guide clip and snapped.  Couldn't see it at first as the break was sneakily hiding behind the guide!  With that found I ordered up a new lower loom section ($15USD of ebay) but in the meantime rearranged things and soldered in a repair.  I arranged it so the repair was down the grey plastic loom holder so the section where the wires would flex had no stiff sections.  So far working great and have the replacement part sitting aside as a spare.

That was a couple weeks ago, but your post helped me again today when I was wondering why the power head wouldn't lift up when I had the wheels locked.  Found the spring-loaded plastic that was supposed to catch it was not on the post where it should rotate.  Somewhere along the line (before I had it) apparently the screw that held this in place fell out or was removed and lost, and when I had things apart to fix the wiring I guess I didn't get that back in place correctly.  Found a usable screw and washer in my parts bins and it should be good to go for a good while now.  Could get a proper replacement washer and screw (DY-911106-01 and DY-910703-02) to make it right, IF I feel the need to spend $10USD for the itty bitty parts to do so...

So once more a very grateful thanks for sharing your experience.  So many years later still helping people out.  You deserve a nice pint for this!

But I do have a question to close this post... after putting the power switch plastics back in (which was fiddly) I don't think they feel like they should.  On review of parts diagrams I've noticed there is an on/off actuation arm listed (DY-966031-01) that I don't see in my vac and didn't see in your photos.  I'm looking at the exploded view here:

[attachimg=1]

Anyone have any insight on this?  The vac is working without and I can't find anything about how this fits in, but I'm wondering if the switches would feel more "positive" with that part in place.

I've managed to fix the brush roll on my colleague's DC25. It wasn't turning on. The reset switch was faulty.
From your pics the cyclone didn't seem as complicated as DC40 so I decided to give it a clean. I took the screws under pre motor filter, cleaned it even though it was pretty clean, waited two days until it dried. Put it all together. There's just not much I could do wrong I think, is there?
Well, I guess you were right MVacs , I should've left it for someone competent as the dirt collects on pre motor filter now instead of bin. I completely don't have a clue what's wrong.
