Hi
I've inherited a Hoover model number U4002 and I'm trying to bring it back to life. Some time ago when still in use the bag bellows split and the bellows ring broke I suspect when my Grandfather tried to change the bellows so it was pushed to the back of the cupboard under the stairs and forgotten about.
Sadly he passed away now and in sorting out his effects I found the hoover. I've managed to track down a bellows and a replacement bellows ring, however I notice that its standing a bit lopsided. Further investigation shows that there is a lot of play between the rear wheel axle and this metal bracket that is screwed onto the underneath. The metal bracket holds the wheel axle tight against the chassis casting...well is supposed to, but on this machine the bracket has worn away. Does anyone on here know if anyone has one of these brackets or if there is something missing from causing the wonky stance? Pic attached of the underside. Many thanks Matt

Hi Matt!
Nice vac, sorry to hear about the circumstances in which you acquired it though...
It's been many years since I've had a Ranger, have you fully pinpointed the wobble down to that bracket? The axle itself shouldn't move I don't think, so maybe try packing it out with a few wraps of insulation tape around where the axle passes through the bracket? From what I can see though it doesn't look that worn, certainly not enough to make it lop sided.. When upright, can you physically push any of the parts around?

Hi Beko
Thanks for the reply. Well it is a bit strange but I have no experience of these big fellas as I run a Junior at home so I was expecting it to be the same. On this machine the height control is on one side so essentially the weight of the machine pushes down on the rear axle. Common sense would have had that axle passing through a nylon bush or something but it appears on these that the steel bracket (does it have a name?) is all that holds the axle hard against the chassis. The Axle also seems to move from side to side as there is nothing to secure it into a specific place. There is a slot cast into the chassis and there appears to be a notch in the axle but no evidence of anything. Should there be a clip or something? There is a washer but this looks wrong and doesn't do much. Hopefully this pic shows how lopsided this axle is.

Matt, I have pushed the link to your topic here out on our Facebook and Twitter as well as there are lots of the vintage vac guys read these channels.
Beko above is one of our vintage Hoover gurus, but other opinions are valuable too.
Stick around, you'll get some more good replies I hope. :icon_nod:

An empty notch mat imply a missing circlip. I've got a Hoover Senior 652a in bits atm, and that has circlips in all those grooves you speak of.
Try wrapping a bit of wire around the groove to simulate a circlip and see if that improves it. Otherwise now Stu has shared it someone more iknowledgeable with the older machines than myself should pipe up!
Something does look amiss though, it shouldn't be that lopsided

Thanks guys

I think the bracket is the guide for the tool adaptor. Never even been close to one of these so not much help. :grinn:

Oh dear
further looking at this U4002 and the fan is shot. It has a cast metal fan and at least 3 blades missing and the pulley is quite worn too. Any ideas on these? I expect these are not parts that you can get?
-
You'll still get pattern fans and possibly, Stuart, can you check Q?
-
Is it the same as a 1334?

I'm not hot on the old Hoover stuff, and there are many fans.
-
No, their bigger. I've got a q book at home I'll have a look.
And there's lots of Hoover fans, many on your forum. Don't be so silly!
-
Thanks everyone so far for all your help on this. :tiphat:

Turns out myself and Baron_Matt live very close to each other. This should make diagnosis much easier! Pop round one weekend Matt and we'll have a look, and you can have a play with the toys. Might have my Concept One working by then, still got a Kirby G4 for a few days too as the owner is on holiday!
-
Think you can get them on ebay.
None on there at the moment though.
-
And there's lots of Hoover fans, many on your forum. Don't be so silly!
Don't be a plonker. I mean when I put in Q fan for Hoover vac, it shows me 6 pages of the buggers. By not hot I mean not up to speed with identifying parts. I've forgotten them all since I learned them in the 80s. :chuckle:
-
I know, I was winding you up! Seems put new member lives a stone's throw from me, so I'll have visual sight of it soon, and will grab my old q parts lists and find a number or 2 for you try
-
I think the Q ref is FAN24?
-
FAN24 is showing as out of stock. Presumably discontinued.

http://www.mastersparesonline.com/product/index/2045
Not clear if in stock here or not?
There is also one on eBay and one on Amazon, but silly prices, £22 and £33!
-
dose say no longer available on Masterspares. :whist11:
-
Yes, but there is a price shown, and you can place the item in your basket, so it's ambiguous.
-
you then get an email saying the item is no longer available, been there done that.
