Title: Sun bleached Dyson? No problem! :)
Post by: Parwaz7862 on November 04, 2013, 01:23:42 am
I haven't tried this but I am 75% sure that this may work. Best thing to do is to try it in a small area first to see if it works
YOU WILL NEED:
Steel wool
Polish or wax and/or buffer or polisher

1) Scrub the sun bleached area of the Dyson til it goes away
2) You will need to get the wax or polish and apply it to the area you have scrubbed and then buff it with the polisher
3) Enjoy!

Yikes, not sure I like the sound of using wire wool on plastic  :o

The only issue with using a machine polisher is it whips off any writing in seconds.

I detail cars in the tiny amount of spare time I have left, and have used my Rotary polisher with spot pads and a light diminishing polish, and whilst it works very very well, I have to stay away from writing, and go over it with a filler heavy glaze by hand to just cover over any swirls.

I have a 1988 Turbopower U1220, which is in great condition, but I didn't pay attention when polishing (with a black pad and glaze, not even polish) and it faded the royal trademark right down. Not removed completely, but everytime I look at it I know.

You can see I stopped polishing at that point, and just gave it a hand polish with a glaze, then put some heavy wax on

Note the fading of the Hoover logo and height markings.

After the glaze and wax. Unless you get really close, you cant tell!

The wire wool and polish probably would work, but you would have to steer clear of stickers, and be damn sure you could polish it up again. Having wet sanded cars, it takes about 4 hours of machining to bring the paint back.

Tell you what, I have a scrap faded grey DC04 that I pillage for parts, and some 0000# wool. Will give it a go on the cyclone this weekend, as the cyclone is broken and could do with going to the tip anyway and post the results! Not saying it wont work, but will it be worth it?

However, get an old enamel painted Hoover, a nice heavy cut green pad and some heavy polish and buff away!

Then a glaze

I put another glaze on this one, had just had it delivered and got excited!!

We use G3 for plastic polishing, but it doesn't remove discolouration.

I only have Menzerna polishes, although got some G3 bodywork renovator, but it's just super resin polish in a different bottle really.

Will try them all! The body is scrap anyway, only keep it as it's easier to store the whole machine rather than boxes of parts!

Had a crack at this last night!

Thought that was more faded than it was, and nearly gave up, but then I remembered I had

this tanned beauty in the garage!

So...

Marked out a 50/50 line with masking tape, and got to work. After about 20 minutes it did come silver again!

However, I then turned the polisher on, and (this is how I do it on the car so did it here) I spread the polish on the lowest setting, then cranked it up to 4 for 5 passes, then down to 3 for another 5 passes (diminishing polish you see!) then back to 1 for the final breakdown.

This got rid of the sanding marks with ease, but the heat generated (and I was moving quite quickly to avoid any hotspots) turned the plastic tanned again...

Slight improvement, more noticable on the pictures now, but in real life the difference is not great. Certainly not geat enough for the effort required!

So I beleive now that the plastic doesn't fade with sunlight, it fades with heat, as I managed to take it all off, but then put it back again with heat. Trying to hand polish the marks left by the wire wool would be a non starter too, over a whole machine your arm would give out and you wouldnt be able to keep the pace required

Quickly whizzed the machine over another area just to check that the polish only didn't magically sort it out, and it didn't.

Made it super shiny and smooth, but no dent in the fading

Oh, and DO NOT USE WIRE WOOL ON ANY WRITING OR STICKER as this happens (tool door is already broken and scrap, I didn't do this to a mint machine!!)

So there you have it, I wouldn't recommend wire wool and polishing to remove sun fading. Removing fine scratches and the dinks and cuts the machine gets from daily abuse - maybe, you could take the damage down to smooth then polish back to a shine quite easily.

I sand dc04 or dc07 cleaner heads with wet and dry, this removes deep marks from when they are rammed up against furniture, then I buff with autoglym super resin, gets it up like new :)

Great idea! I remember how bad the old DC01 would get. Remember thinking, how is this modern tech!
Got grimy so quick.
