Title: Looking for scrap Batteries.
Post by: Bobbych on March 19, 2020, 04:44:36 pm
Hi

I'm looking for sources of defective battery packs.

These are recycled by strippingand the battery cells  used to create small solar power banks for rural communities in underdeveloped countries.

I strip the cells out of the batteries. Test them then ship them to a collegue who is in the military and is helping NGOs to help rural commuities. Mostly  the BMS in the Pack is faulty so all the Cells(6) are fine. Now and again I found 1 bad cell which kills the Pack but the other 5 cells are fine.

If I know you want them ongoing, I'm happy to save them up and send you them in say 20's or 25s if you cover the £10 P&P cost. Better than them going to landfill.

Yes I would gladly take any packs you have. My colleague will cover the P+P so please send as many as you can for the £10. Hopefully and of tour fellow Vac repair counterparts can do the same. As you say better than land fill and going to a good cause.

What are BMS?

Battery Management System. It's a circuit board that controls the rate and level of charge and discharge. Every rechargeable device has one.

That's interesting, I always thought it was the batteries!

I have stripped more that 300 dyson batteries. That is 1800  cells and only binned about 10. All others were useful. They did not have full original capacity but about 80% which can be used.

Yes - i too have only ever had one cell at fault on a stripped battery.
I and the other lads use the cells on our fenix cree fishing lamps, fenix use the cells with no pronounced nipples on the + terminal.
Best i have found so far are 2200ma samsung cells.

The V8 packs have 21700 cells, not 18650. There are 3000mAh.

So would the vacuum run if you disable the BMS and just have the cells connected to the vacuum?

NO NO & NO again. You should never use litium batteries without a BMS. The BMS prevents over charging and over discharging. If you over charge cells they can explode and catch fire.
