Title: DC14 stopped dead and now wont start - motor or ?

Hi, while using the DC14 it suddenly just cut out and stopped and would not switch back on. Cleaned main filter and looked for blockages in case the thermo cut out switch. But surely after a rest it would at least switch on once cooled down if it was this ?

Changed fuse so not that.

have exposed the switch in handle but unsure how to test - do these suddenly fail ?

Then the motor ? Most posts seemed to indicate a burning smell if motor on way out - but did not get that. So could the motor have just suddenly failed without the burning smell ?

Is there anything else - any other wiring failure I could look for ?

Appreciate any replies as I can probably replace switch or motor if it is these ?

Hiya. So, you've got the switch housing off. Do you get a positive click when you press/release the switch? - I doubt very much the problem is with the switch.
Have a look at the post-motor filter. If it's full of carbon it will restrict the airflow away from the motor, causing it to overheat, therefore causing the TOC to kick in.
With TOC's, sometimes they reset themselves and sometimes they fail in the open circuit position (all it is is bi-metallic switch!).

I think you're probably going to strip your machine, pull it's motor out, do a continuity check on it's TOC.

If there is black shite everywhere and the armature is black/looks very worn, it's time to call Stuart/Olga/Claire at Manchester Vacs

The mains lead is a suspect as well.

Thanks. That looks possible as not getting a meter reading at machine end of that lead. So have cut  back both ends and crimped new connectors to switch. Do you happen to know - only live and neutral to the sealed plug, so can I just wire a new plug with these connections as no earth? Is that in the dc14 ?

Yes, Dysons do not have an earth as they have no exterior metal parts.

Well you can but I doubt very much if it's  anything to do with the plug, espescially if you've checked the fuse. As  Stuart said, have a bloody good look at the cable. Have you tried con checking (with it switched on but not plugged in), (not taking the piss mate!)

Broken left arm at the moment so quite happy to help folk. Unless somebody on this site tells me to wind my neck in because I'm talking cobblers!

The first thing I would do is try a known working cable, then the switch then the motor on a dc14, there's nothing else electrically to them!

My moneys on the mains cable though
