Title: Childhood memory
Post by: Madrat on January 20, 2017, 10:24:13 pm
OMG after just flicking through YouTube I stumbled on this video

This is the same vac my mother had after her junior died, I remember the salesman coming round to demonstrate it, never ever seen one like it since, I used to sit on it and ride it round the living room, or stick the floor head ( think ours was just white) in the hose hole and call it K9.  Never used paper bags, mum just used to empty the cloth bag and put it back in.  As with most cylinder cleaners it was useless with pet hair so it wasn't long before my long suffering father had to pay for another vacuum, a yellow electrolux 502

Must have been called something different in UK ?  any one recognise it??

From what I have managed to find out, it's a Swiss or Swedish company that is part of the Electrolux group. but that's as far as I've got.

A Volta. I thought Electrolux when I saw it. Perhaps one and the same in the UK.

I was thinking about my mom's vac when I was growing up.  Didn't know anything about it, started with a google "1980 vacuum wood grain" and nailed it immediately and found a great post on vacuumland  covering it:

That takes me back.  I used to sit on it and ride it around while my mom cleaned up. :))

I used to knock over our DC01 and sit on the bin and ride it like a horse (wtf) and I used to be shit scared of it cos of the bin black rubber seal and the max line was like "the eye" :/

I also had it next to me when I watched TV.

I remember feeling vibrations whenever it was on, thought the thing was a beast.

Haha it's funny because both my kids like to flip the dysons on their backs and ride on the bin just like that.   *snip*in' kids, man.  :))

Kirby's.
My dad sold them when I was a kid back in the early 70's.
We had one & I hated it.
When it was my turn to vacuum I used to beat it up a lot - fling it around - while no one was looking of course. Never did it any damage tho as made of stainless steel back then?
Funny as now  have bought my Dad two ol' Kirby's found in thrift stores.
Mind that isn't what he uses - but he still swears they were one of the best vacuums ever made.
