Hello all,
I have a difficult problem relating to a DC07 All Floors. The pre-motor sponge filter is clogging very quickly and suction is being lost. The filter requires rinsing/cleaning every time the bin is emptied. I’ve spent some time researching the cause, looking at this forum, searching the internerd and have carried out the following which has made little or no difference:
- Disassembled the cyclone assembly and cleared all the dust and debris from the fine dust collecting cones at the top and the length of the assembly itself. Inside the blue cyclone assembly is completely clear of any dust/debris as is each individual cone at the top (spray/water cleaned and checked the cones are clear with a bendy torch).
- Checked the Fine Dust Collector Seal which is seated correctly (gripping the bin lid tightly) and there appears to be no obvious sign of dust entry at the base of the blue cyclone assembly. The seal itself has no cracks or holes.
- Checked all hoses and the air path through the unit – no blockages and all seals appear good.
- The pre-motor filter (rigid yellow plastic part) appears good, although you cannot see daylight through it, I am assuming this is still good to use.
- The pre-motor filter (sponge part) is clogged with very fine dust which builds up to form a thick layer, reducing suction to zero if left unchecked. This happens as the bin fills up and needs cleaning every time the bin is emptied.
Given all the above, I cannot figure out why the majority of the fine dust is not being collected at the top of the cyclone assembly part even when the cones at the top and the entire cyclone assembly is 100% clear of dust/debris. Instead, large amounts of fine dust are making their way to the pre-motor filter clogging it quickly.
The DC07 was serviced in December 2012 by a Dyson man-in-a-van. Motor, roller bar and hoses were replaced. This problem was noticed after the service (the pre-motor filter had only been cleaned a handful of times in the several years before this).
Just wondering whether anyone has seen this before. I'm soon to throw the thing out the window if I can't resolve it (which is a shame as it's been great up until now).
Any clues or thoughts would be greatly received. Thanks.

When you say you disassembled the cyclone assembly, did you take off the handle? Because that sounds like a blocked cyclone to me.

Yes. Took the top off to reveal the cones. Used pressure water to clear each cone then checked each one was clear - bendy torch moved round the bottom of the cones shining light so you can see from the holes at the top. All clear.

And this is normal household use? Not builders rubble or plaster dust?

Yes, normal household use. Just one cat. No plaster dust or similar heavy duty use.

Can you post a photo of the inside of the yellow pre-motor filter casing?

From all the comments you made, I believe your vacuum is fine however I think you have a problem with FDC seal, either it is not on right or something is wrong with it. This is the only part that will allow dirt into the cyclone or circulate thru the filter.

Here's a couple of photos of the yellow part. I've also attached a pic of the blue sponge part. After only a few minutes of use, you can begin to see the fine dust collecting on it already.
I was always a little suspicious of the fine dust seal, but it looks perfect, no holes or wear and it jams tightly on to the bin lid (you can test this by taking the bin off and testing the seal directly onto the upturned lid). It's a perfect fit. Mystery.

Yes, this is the FDC seal. Always, when you remove the cyclone from the dirt bin. Make sure the bin cover is open than insert the cyclone. I have seen lots of my clients do the opposite, what happen is the seal is open and it allows dirt to go thru.

I've just come across this thread. I am having exactly the same problem with my daughters DC07 (standard) and also cannot find a reason for it. I recently fitted a new motor, after the machine had been clogged up, jetted out the cyclone and fitted new filters etc. and when I tried it the dust seemed to be getting straight through to the pre-motor filter. I contacted Dyson and asked them for advice, they said, either the same seal was split and letting the dust through, or the cyclone itself was broken. I can't see any fault with either of them. I am pondering wether to try a new seal or just buy a new cyclone. I will check out what emurib said about the open bin first. Thanks :'(

We use a few of these but not very many and our Tech agrees that the FDC seal is probably the problem.
It seems that there are two types but the more popular one is the one pictured above.

Your filters look fine - you could soak the yellow filter case in water then a few healthy taps on the group outside and this will dislodge any dirt lurking in the mesh.
When you say you disassembled the cyclone, did you remove the fins and seal to give better access when rinsing out? Where you say the seal looks ok, I'm wondering whether these parts weren't refitted quite correctly and the seal hasn't seated against the cyclone properly?

Yes - cyclone (blue part) COMPLETELY disassembled. Lid, fins..everything. Water flused through the lot. No evidence of any dust/debris in any part of the cyclone assembly after cleaning. All cones at the top completely clear of everything. Totally clean. The whole lot was put back together. And the FDC is gripping the bin lid tightly. There no holes or gaps in the FDC or the seal it's making with the bin lid. Integrity of the seal looks good. Suction after cleaning (and pre-motor cleaning) is excellent (pulls the carpet up slightly as you push it around) and the bin fills up nicely. And then the suction tends to reduce as the pre-motor filter clogs up. By the time the bin is completely full, filter is clogged and suction is greatly reduced.
Maybe I should just get a new FDC after all :boggleeye:

Have you got family/friends/neighbours with a DC07 that you could borrow the cyclone from and try on yours to see if the same thing happens?
