Title: Clutch issue
Post by: beko1987 on May 26, 2015, 06:40:23 pm
Refurbished a dc04 for someone a month or so ago.  Came up nicely as they usually do,  but i do remember the clutch jammed upon reassembly.  Stripped it,  nothing wrong,  reassembled it,  jammed.  Different clutch,  all was well.

I have it back now.  The clutch was jammed. Took the base plate off and fired her up,  clutch was fine.  Baseplate back on,  still fine.  Did some vacuuming with it,  and all is well.  Parked it upright,  then reclined it again,  jammed...

Up,  down,  fine
Up,  down,  fine
Up,  down,  fine
Up,  down,  jammed
Up, down,  fine etc.

Not too sure where to go from here tbh,  anyone come across this before? Got a sneaky feeling the brush head may be warped,  but it didnt seem wonky during the refurb.  Literally everything that springs to mind is fine,  but it jams up randomly.  Even moving the knob from on to off makes it jam...

There have been a few on here with clutch problems.  I've not come across it though.

Mine did the same but i sold it to a unsuspecting bloke as recently refurbed for £50 and left the clutch in off position. No word for 5 weeks. And he used to own a dc14 clutched. Some people eh. :))

Not sure i agree with selling it with a fault,  arent you worried about any comeback?

Either way,  its not being sold,  but refurbed,  so need to make sure its top notch! Will have it apart again later and see if anything becomes apparent...

A used clutch is very cheap thing. Why knowingly sell something faulty?  :boggleeye:

I'm wondering (now I'm at work and unable to do anything until tonight) if it's the base plate...

I did take it off and fire her up, and it spun fine, with the base plate on it jams...

It has a different base plate on anyway, as one of the wheels underneath had punched itself out as they do, and it worked fine before. May go get another base plate out of the loft and see if that improves things. Maybe it's warped and not sitting true to the brushroll. Anyone encountered this before?

Renault - Although I don't agree with selling faulty things, I did have a 33 in for a refurb last week where the owner complained of poor performance. She just dropped it off, and I noticed the clutch was in the off position... I may have neglected to tell her this, and gave it a full refurb anyway... (it did need it, suction was fine but it had been used to vacuum up sick...). That's about as cheeky as it gets I'm afraid. If the owner had put the clutch to the on position, then heard the noise and complained you would have to fix it, and go into 'customer relations' mode to keep a good reputation up. I won't be charging for this clutch issue, it worked before I had it, and now it doesn't. Seems pretty clear cut to me...

I would leave the vacuum on without the soleplate for like a good 5 mins or so.

Well,  I tried:

Strip and reassemble the clutch -  nothing
Strip and reassemble another clutch  nothing
Old random brushroll on both clutches incase the q know who brushroll was at fault -  nothing
Dofferent brushroll housing incase it was warped -  nothing
A yet to be refurbed clutch from the pile with ok old belts -  success!

All i can think of is the new belts (have q had a dodgy batch recently? Dont think so as all others ive had have been fine!) were too tight,  jamming the roll.

Either way,  it seems fine,  still grooms wellvon the new brushroll.  I parked and opened the clutch a good 20 times and all is well.  It got picked up earlier,  will see if i get it back again!

Is very strange though

Its not Quаltex belts beause mine had 2 clutches and a new qtex brushroll and no difference. My original clutch went when the brush bearings seized and caused it to lock up.
