It's my birthday soon and we need a vacuum cleaner for our narrowboat. I'm thinking small but it has to work properly, like a Dyson. Bin capacity not important and would prefer mains rather than rechargeable. Any ideas?
-
Depending on storage, you need a small ball or the smallest cylinder.
-
Usually I recommend a DC04 or 07 or 14, but since its a boat this won't really work too well.
I think the DC50 will be a good choice, Small, Mains operated, Easy to maneuver etc
-
Do you prefer upright or cylinder machines?
-
I prefer a cylinder machine - I like to get down on my hands and knees!

I think it would be good to discuss what floor types you have??
Carpets would benefit from a Turbo/Turbine head and likewise hard floors are better with combi or parquet floor tools.
Depending on what you come back with may change my suggestion.

Floor is mostly wood, but there's a rug which shows all the dirt. But I usually use a crevice tool on everything.

I would go for a DC05 unless you want a newer fancier model. a DC05 has good suction and is of a reasonable size.
DC22 and DC26 are the newer smaller models.
Hope this helps.

Well, that's interesting! DC05 is our home machine. I'm looking for something smaller for the boat. I'll have a look at the other two you mention.

See if you could try a DC50 somehow?
Borrow a friends for a few mins if they have one?
I think the DC50 would be best for a boat personally.
But of course its the owners decision depending on whats reccomended.

Hi,
I own a DC26 and a DC50. The DC26 is a mini cylinder vacuum with good suction (slightly less than your DC05 but still close enough with an approx 50 AW difference. The DC26 is very lightweight ans is so small it's roughly the same size as an A4 paper! It features a flatout head which is great for getting under the lowest of furniture.
The DC50 is a pretty good mini upright which is also lightweight. Very good performance from this machine despite the low suction due to the clever design of the active base plate, for example.
Any questions please feel free to ask ;)

As Parwaz mentioned, the DC26 is a good shout.
If you like the look and style of the DC26, you could also look at the DC39 or the DC47 which are newer 'ball' models of a similar size.
All three of these models have the similar hose and wand set up. If, for storage reasons, you wanted something that wraps around itself the DC22 would be a good shout - this can come with either a low reach head on the allergy and multi floor models or a turbine head on the animal models.
-
As already mentioned above the Dc50 is a nice little dyson as the handle retracts into the body like the Dc24 so storage on a narrowboat would be easier than the hose on a cylinder.
Hope you find what your looking for.
Regards Adam

I just remembered- You could also look at the DC49 which is basically a DC26 but with a ball, a carbon fibre turbine head, a digital motor which is VERY quiet and still has great suction :) These aren't that popular TBH and have been discontinued I believe.
As MrDyson mentioned, the DC39 is amazing. We have one at home; the DC39 animal. It's quiet, the triggerhead does a great job at picking up and grooms carpets quite good. The brushbar can be controlled by the handle to be switched off for hard floors and delicate surfaces. The suction is very powerful, a bit more than your DC05 and it doesn't get stuck in doorways thanks to it's clever swivel steering hose and ball design. It's an improvement over the DC05 in most ways, I would recommend it. A bit large but it's worth it

If you only have 1 rug, I would go for a handheld of some kind, perhaps one with a motorised brush for the rug.

Many thanks to everyone who has replied so far. It's given me some ideas, but a new DC50 is a lot of money. Are they any good second hand?
-
I have a used DC50 which I bought cheaply, it's an excellent machine. Just make sure you get a good working one and try it out before you buy it. Or better yet, a refurbished one.
-
I'll do a recon DC50 @ £125 delivered in case of any use.
-
That's a bargain of a price ;)
-
Get a nice Sebo, miles better than any Dyson will ever be.
And, a good size for storage.

Thanks again to everyone for your helpful suggestions. Things have moved quickly - I spotted a DC50 on ebay in the locality. For £50 it was mine. It's now in the kitchen awaiting a proper 'get to know you' session. I'll have to look for the instructions online.

Sure you will love it!
My uncle has one and its amazing! as much as I prefer the older DC04 I still really like the DC50

My cousin has had the DC50 ERP model for a year and a half now, so far no problems and it's brilliant
My DC50 is also doing well so far, only had it a few months but I bought it used

Thanks MVacs. I did groan to myself when I started looking at all the picture instructions, but cheered up when I found some actual words underneath!
I have rinsed out the top filter and removed the one in the ball. This second one looks like it's made of paper - does it really need rinsing out under a tap? Won't it disintegrate?
(Edit to add: it's a DC50 ErP if this makes a difference)

The paper looking filter is actually very strong and can be washed out as much as you want, I put mine in the washing machine and a few months later it's still as good as new! It should last the lifetime of the machine
