9am - I had a rolly and checked ebay. Nothing
10am - Rolly time again, checked ebay again for reasons unknown and Boom, there she was!
Advertised for spares/repairs, in storage for 15 years, new cyclone unit 6 years ago and currently dead. £9.99 BIN.
10.04am - I owned a DC03 Clear!
4pm came, and I drove over for 4.30. Home by 5.20 thanks to some stupid :censored:mazda 6 on the twisties doing 25mph because theres a corner...

To be fair to the seller he turned it over and pointed this out straight away, the centre part of the baseplate is missing. I assured him this was not an issue :thumbsup:

This highlights another issue, the wheel axle has gone rusty, staining the lower motor cover. I've seen new ones on q know who, BUT, that would mean loosing/moving the ratings sticker over and I doubt that would go well so may well tidy this up but leave it slightly stained...

Cyclone is indeed bob new! Has signs of VERY brief use. I will use this more before I refurb it, then probably not use it at all afterwards!
So, all this being brilliant and all, it was indeed dead. I started at the switch, and after 10 minutes of painstaking levering, I cracked the chassis very very slightly, and the switch came out. The contacts were green and it didnt click when pressed. It's a 4 pole switch though (need one of those too, more urgently tbh), so I cut up some cable I chopped off a 1981 Electrolux above some damage, and bridged the cables (as I can't just go crimping new spades onto the end so they plug into each other as you can see it!)

Suction is much better than my DC03 Absolute+, and it highlighted a blockage in the wand! Blockage removed it was fine! I think the belts need replacing though!
This will be a tough refurb, as I'll have to polish the blody inside as much as the outside! Hey ho...

I have one of these they are lovely, but can be so fragile, I hope "you know who" has a base plate, I was very lucky and found a complete new one on ebay but it cost about £15.00 I think these perform exceptionally well given the tiny motor.

I just checked three suppliers, none have that baseplate. I can try two more on Monday. I'll also look in our DC03 stuff just in case we do.

Amazing how parts supplies drop off the face of the earth isn't it! Can't find much new dc03 stuff nowadays I've found

We bought a stack of wands and brushrolls today. Still have new motors and clutches. I am planning to refurb my silver/white DC03 I recently came by soon. 8)

Having a bit of an issue with the switch...
The switch I removed (as it's broken) has 4 connectors, both the L and N connect to the switch. However, I cannot find a 4 pole switch anywhere, just 2 pole ones. Of course, I could get a 2 pole switch and wire the neutral together as per my other DC03 (and every other one by the looks of it), but that sounds like a cop-out...
Anyone got a 4 terminal dyson switch they would sell?

I have bought (well, reserved, yet to pay for it) a non broken DC03 Clear wand (thanks richieg), so I'll keep this broken wand for storage, and keep the unbroken one for display use!

Either way, there is a screw under the switch cover. I didnt put the switch cover back on after replacing the switch so I didnt have to battle it off again. It is now temporarily mislaid... :censored:

The belt lifter tool is very tricky to use on a dc03 as it doesnt sit right, and the tab of the clutch housing it sits on is damn fragile, so gingerly I wrestled the brushroll out

Nope, got that covered! Should have had the back together bit written uo now but Amy did the asda shop and now we are in bed, but I got a new soleplate months ago that now finally has a purpose in life - to sit on this and never get used!

Excellent thread so far! :thumbsup; I remember when we had our DC03 in 2006ish we got it cheap, £6 (a bit like getting a DC24/25 for £6 today as it was 9 years in production) ;D It was pretty crap sadly, only good for surface dirt and dust on carpets only. Was pathetic on hard floors cos nothing was picked up, I remember vacuuming up some spilled cornflakes off tile flooring and it never sucked any of it up. Also, the hose suction was so bad, I remember picking something up and it was just weak so the thing rattled in the middle tubing.This thread brought back some memories ;D Thanks! I am now on the hunt for a DC03 Absolute+ or Standard and a DC01 Standard ;) 8)

Hi Sam: The switch your looking for is a 2 pole, 4 terminal switch. Not a 4 pole switch.

Aaah Mvacs sent me a switch months ago! I just didnt refit the switch cover so I wouldnt have to take it apart again.

Luckily, the ratings plate sticker peeled off and stuck back onto the new part perfectly

I got a DC04/07 wheel axle from the shed, and measured it against the DC03 one. there was 4/5mm in it, but once the wheels and glamour caps were on, you cant tell!

It also meant I could get rid of these scratches on the old LMC. Into the recycling bin it went!
I got some glass polish, and some gloves so I didnt put fingerprints all over it and buffed it up

The glass polish was messy though, and there was sod all left so I got some G3 Paintwork renovator (filler heavy silicone polish) and thoroughly polished every bloody part, inside and out, it took an age but looked soooo good afterwards!

We had a really battered one ages ago that was only fit to break.
They have a slightly different motor to a standard DC02. Same as the one in the Recyclone.
They do exist, you posted this photo a couple of years back elsewhere. ;D

Id love to have a find like that! Knowing the value is possibly quite tricky though, I mean they cost x when new, and to some people would just be a hoover, to others they could be worth megacoin to a limited market! Sometimes thats where ebay cam be handy, and things find their own value

As you can see, I stole the switch cover from the Ab+ as it's not as lovely as the clear!

The Ab+ will be stripped again (I'll update it's unfinished thread) to see where the air leak lies now I have the seal locations of the clear to go by, and we shall see if I can make it work any better! The filter are in better condition on the ab+ than the clear, so that should not be an issue.

Ive been using it this morning and yep, it does have an issue. Hopefully a thorough stripdown will reveal where the missing seal is. It has suction, but when you block it off, it doesnt sound blocked, if you know what I mean.
Removing the shit filters makes it 8% better too!

I'm pretty confident that it is as clean as it could be short of machine polishing, and being clear the chances of getting the plastic too hot and ruining it are quite high! It passes the 5 steps test anyway!

The nice man from Vacuum Rescue in Sussex was going to see some friends in Oxford today, and he was the chap I bought the DC03 clear wand from, so he popped in on his way past for a personal delivery! Sadly we were in the hospital with the boy, so money was left in the shed, and it was swapped for a wand, sorry Rich, thanks alot though!

It's not too damaged either. Little crack by the side catches which isn't worth glueing up

This sticker came from the old wand, and looks OK from a distance, I'll leave it up to you wether to scrap it off when you see it in person, you can tell where it peeled off on one corner

It arrived this morning. Slight cracking where the handle joins the canister, but certainly the best one of these I have ever seen. In fact, I have never seen a complete one that wasnt smashed to bits. :thumbsup:
Our chap said, "He does a nice job that Beko bloke" and asked what wax you use. :chuckle:

Thanks for the feedback! It was a labour of love, but worth it! Just try not to get it too dusty, or youll have to buy some microfibres and buff it back up!

Hi I know I’m very late to this thread but I’ve recently acquired a dc03 clear myself. The only problem Is that the handle is the later type that isn’t transparent at all, it’s a completely different plastic to what the rest of the machine is made out of. I was wandering if you had any early type clear wands left that would of originality been fitted to the machine that you would be willing to sell.

They are very rare and very fragile. You'll struggle to find one.
The only one we have - and this may be the same as the one you describe you have already - is one that is more of a solid blue in colour. I think later ones were fitted with those.

This isn’t about the handle this time. I’ve just finished reassembling the cleaner and I’ve stripped the clutch and changed the belts. The problem is that it makes that awful ratcheting sound when I go to recline the machine. However if you recline it without the machine being turned on and start it from the reclined position it’s fine. I’ve refurbished a few dc03 and whenever I’ve replaced the belts they’ve had the exact same issues but I’ve never had this problem on a dc04,14,33. Do you think the machine needs a new clutch or is it my error. If it helps it’s the original from 1998 and it has a metal clutch cog and a metal cover instead of the white ones used not long after. Any suggestions would be much appreciated as I would love to have it 100% functional and not have to faf about when using it

Assuming it's assembled correctly in the machine, if it didn't do that before, you've made a mistake rebuilding the clutch. They do that when they're jammed. We routinely rebuild the older clutches with metal parts, so there's nothing obsolete in there.
I can ask our chap on Monday if there's anything specific to those clutches that differs. I'm not aware there is but I'll ask.

Just stripped it down again and everything looked ok. When I put it back in I made sure that the brushroll spun as freely as it possibly could. Still making the horrible noise, I don’t know if it’s because of how fast the cleanerhead makes contact with the floor because it’s quite fast leaving no time for the clutch to engage properly but at this point I’m stumped.

I don’t know if this makes a difference but if you leave the machine switched off, recline it and make sure it’s in the drive position so that when you spin the brushroll it turns the motor. If you spin it with your hand with a bit of force you can feel the clutch slipping and jamming up. I’ve tried the exact same thing with 2 dc04s that I have in my room and neither of them do the same thing. As the machine is clear and you can see the clutch belt on the motor spindle it all looks to be lined up correctly with no problems. I think the next step is to buy a new clutch that you are selling at the minute as I’d like this machine to work to 100% of its capabilitiy

Our chap says there are a couple of different set ups on early clutches, and if not a faulty internal component, it may be to do with the spacers. Different versions have differences - some have 2 some have 3 - and he cant speculate unless its in front of him.
A recon clutch might be the short answer.

It’s t he very early type with t he 3 spacers in, a metal cog and a metal backplate which the friction material sits into if that helps.
