Title: Motor Brushes....

Anyone ever had any success fitting new brushes to a YDK motor? I had one and found that one of the brushes was sticking in its slide cartridge, freed it up, and away she ran.
As was very little depth left on the brushes I thought I would treat it to a new set, duly purchased and fitted, hey presto sparks!!!, gratitude I thought.
Why did this happen?, not a huge amount of sparks, but the original once working had only tiny sparks on brush contact edge only, whereas new had several tracking lines trying to go round the commutator.
Very annoying!

They do tend to take a while to bed in.

Many people clean the armature with a com stick before fitting them for better results I am told.

Thanks for reply. I did clean the comm with very fine sand paper, then with cotton bud and methyletad spirit,
So is it best to run it for 15 minutes or so and see if sparking dies down before I condemn it to the scrap pile?

Yes thats what i did with mine and it did settle down with minimal sparking

hi
   i have tried many times to change carbon brushes and  wow like november the 5th  apparently the new brushes  are flat and don't go to the shape of the old commentator so a com stick is used to bed them in unfortunately i can get hold of one does any body know were i can get one from

I have also always had the sparking problem and even tried carbon brushes from different sources but they still spark like mad. I read about these com sticks but looked everywhere for them even eBay, googled etc but cant get hold of them anywhere.
