Title: Dc 25 - sparks from brush bar
Post by: Cheekymonkeydotcom on October 16, 2016, 12:31:08 pm
Had sparks from brush bar and then brush wasn't working. Bought a new motor with strong suspicion this was the issue - which it wasn't. Then found circuit board in brush had suspicious charring. Got a new cleaner head circuit board, put in the old motor and sparks at same spot and shut down brush again.

So...

There isn't the char on the board but it's not working. Is there a trip anywhere - or is this in fact the trip? And is it possible the old motor is shorting this?

Don't want to get another board, put in the new motor and have it blow again. Can't find any loose wires or other spots where connection is dodgy.  Would really appreciate some professional input.

Cheers,

Mike

If you have sparks from the brushroll motor, the motor was definitely dead.

Then found circuit board in brush had suspicious charring. Got a new cleaner head circuit board,

If a new one it must have been from us? As far as I am aware, only we sell new ones. If a used one (eBay etc) then it may be duff too.

put in the old motor and sparks at same spot and shut down brush again.

Now here is the funny bit. You had a new motor but put in the sparking one with the new PCB? Not the new one?

Is there a trip anywhere -

Not as such.

or is this in fact the trip?

Yes, trip is in the PCB.

And is it possible the old motor is shorting this?

Totally. As its duff if sparking.

Here's the crack: A duff motor can take out a PCB and vice versa. Why Dyson only sell full cleanerheads. Putting the duff motor with the new PCB might have taken that out too.

Throw the old sparky motor in the bin as step one.

To get this right now you now need a multi-meter, do you have one and are you confident to use it?

Thanks for all the ace information.  Really appreciate it. And yes, got the board - and my next one - from you guys.

Yup. Sounds stupid, but my thought when saw the board fried was that it hadn't been the motor after all - just the board. Then I thought I might just hold the new motor until needed. Yeah, then I thought, probably should stop thinking.

Nope, haven't got a multi-meter now, though have used in past for checking outlet voltage, batteries, but not much else. Can easily get my hands on one. I'm aware of the safety aspects, even if I did just blow a new circuit board on a duff motor😀. Where exactly am I concentrating my search?

Cheers,

Mike

And here's the £30 question: did I blow the new motor when I tried it with the sparked out circuit board? Before I saw the charring?

Probably not.

You are looking for circa 300v DC exiting the PCB towards the motor.

Thanks. Will give it a go.

Hey there. Can you tell me how to check the brush motor to make sure I didn't blow it before putting the new pcb in and possibly blowing that again?

Cheers,

Mike

Checking motor and PCB, actually.  I tried running through for resistance but got nothing on any of the PCBs. Thanks again for all the help.

Easiest way is to plug the PCB in and check the DC output.

The motor just check the resistance across the terminals.

With the old motor the multimeter shows resistance 117 while the new one had resistance of 77. Which I think means they both should both be okay, right? Which makes me wonder why the pcb blew. I suppose next step is to test pcb without motor. Correct?

That the original motor was sparking says it's duff; I'd expect it to be dead. But without checking PCB output (in DC remember) you'll not make progress here. Lets get some juice out of the PCB then see if the new motor runs if so.

Be careful!  :underchair:

Whoop whoop!  Done and done. The circuit board registered 330 and so plugged new motor on and all is good. Thank you so much for all your help!

Take care,

Mike

Glad you are fixed up, Mike.  :tiphat:
