Title: Dc 50 cutting out and very loud
Post by: sussexlad on February 12, 2015, 08:54:40 pm
Hi again I recently acquired a dc50 animal which I was hoping to repair (brought for £20 faulty)
The machine picks up well but makes a horrific noise whilst running and will then switch off after a minute or so. Could you please advise me as to what maybe causing this?.theres no obvious blockages and I e stripped the thing apart so I'm assuming it's either the motor or bearings or brushes (if they even have these ) any advice be wonderful as I can then get parts ordered many thanks in advance

Have you checked inside the cyclone as outlined here: Dyson DC50 Blocked and Hissing – Not Picking Up (http://dysonmedic.co.uk/dyson-dc50-blocked-hissing-not-picking-up/)

Yes I have checked the cyclone which did have a blockage that's now been dislodged however the noise still remains and it continues to switch off . There is no obvious smell of burning so I'm assuming the motors ok ???
The filters where very dirty but the paper one where the motor is seems ok .any tricks or tips to trouble shoot what maybe causing this thanks again

How is the noise if you run it without he cyclone fitted?

The noise remains the same im certain its a issue with the motor I'm some way or form its a very loud noise and it's as though the motors vibrating I currently have a dc25 so can only compare it to that

I'm certain it's something inside the ball that's causing this but have no idea where to start I did begin taking it apart but was not confident enough without a youtube video or some sort of guide ,besides I'm not sure what I'm looking for I did check the bearings on the actual ball plastic housing they seem sound enough.

Would a dead or failing motor cause this or would it just not start at all?
Also are there any brushes in these vacuums
I guess I should bite the bullet and take the whole ball apart and go from there but I'm no expert but am pretty handy with a screwdriver lol

I will reply further tomorrow as off to bed now .i could be cheeky and take to my local repair shop for a quote then at least I know what it needs lmao anyway thanks again

It sounds like the motor is probably caked with crud where the filter hasn't been washed often enough. Same problem as the DC24 motor, they're only small and can't take much punishment. Let's be honest, who remembers to wash out the filters monthly as recommended!?

Problem is, you can clean out the motors to a certain degree but they never run the same again.

There isn't a help guide available yet for the DC50 unfortunately. I've just a motor change on one but it's pretty tough going!

I agree, it sound like the motor is on its way out.  If the fan or bearings are damaged it will create a lot of noise and heat, this will trip the thermal cut out.  :dead-dyson:

You could try looking for a used motor on ebay, or maybe MV can help?

Is the noise in the main motor or the brushbar motor? Assuming the former,  what happens if you run it with the post motor filter removed? Can you see the motor sparking with the filter out?

Not sure if the motor can be seen with the filter removed as there's a lot of plastics hiding the motor away . Anyway called dyson and without a receipt of proof of registration there not willing to look at it for free (£79.99) may well try sell it on for what I paid anyone Intrested in it for £20 and can collect from Brighton ??
