Title: Dyson have launched the 360 Eye Robotic Vacuum Cleaner in the UK
Post by: MVacs on July 07, 2016, 12:03:07 am
We first discussed this back in 2014 >here< (https://manchestervacs.co.uk/DysonForum/index.php/topic,1456.0.html).

But this is it:

They have just been launched in the UK, if you want one they are >here< (http://www.dyson.co.uk/vacuum-cleaners/robot/360eye/360-eye-nickel-blue.aspx) on Dyson's site.

Our first one should arrive Friday!  8)

 ;D

[attachimg=1]

[attachimg=2]

First impression in a nutshell: They are smaller than I imagined. Smaller than they look on the videos. But at least they will be able to get around furniture. Very small cyclone. Nice finish on the product.

A couple of recognisable wheels on the underside from the DC18/25/41 parts bin.  ;)

[attachimg=3]

Little charging station it sits on.

[attachimg=4]

As the 360 Eye is Dyson's latest product (July 2016), I had to take a couple of shots with the first Dyson product the G-Force vacuum (circa 1991).  ;)

[attachimg=5]

[attachimg=6]

So without even reading the book, send it off across the floor by randomly prodding buttons.  :underchair:

[attachimg=7]

And on what was ostensibly a clean carpet and a very short test, it found a little muck.

[attachimg=8]

So here is a random short video of it in action:

You will note that the packaging/charger/manual is all over the floor (which it navigates away from alright) and this is not properly charged, connected to the app or anything. I just wanted to see it work before I do all that.

To keep it test it properly, I have to take it home and connect it to the app and learn the functionality, etc. It may be there some time.  :whist11:

Oh no! Sounds as if you may have to keep it at home for a while!   ;D

It does look very nice, and seems to pick up too. They are really tiny aren't they! While I haven't seen them in person, on a video next to a roomba I couldn't believe how much smaller it seemed.

Hopefully I can find a free/cheap one that is clogged or needs a new battery in a few years!

It is a bit of a faff to set it up via the app.

Took several goes to get it and the router and my phone talking to each other. I guess as they are new, Dyson's cloud was busy.

[attachimg=1]

But it is now connected in the same Dyson app as my fan.

[attachimg=2]

Now time to test it at home.........

MVacs, you can probably answer one question I have about this already, which direction does the brush turn? Does it rotate opposite to the direction of travel? (If that makes sense)

I found the problem with my neato is that the brush rotates the same way an upright's does. So it doesn't really dig into the carpet, where with a manual vacuum the back stroke does this. Since the neato never goes backwards it doesn't reach as deep down and therefore doesn't clean as well as it could.

Thanks

I am not sure what a "Neato" is, but most vacuums rotate the brush underneath towards you, I didn't notice this was different, but I didn't look for that. Knowing Dyson's tendency to recycle tech, I'd doubt this turns the wrong way.

It got a full circuit today. My wife had already been around with the DC35, but it found half a cup full of stuff she had not. So in that case, full marks. When the battery is almost dead it tries to get itself back to the charger. This time it conked out six feet from the charger. But our house is non-standard in the respect that it goes in a circle. And all the doors were open. The living room connects to the hall connects to the kitchen connects to the living room. It conked in the hall and had to make its way back through a long area before it conked just before the charger. But first time out having not mapped the complex room layout? I'll allow it that.

Second time out I only gave it the lounge and kitchen to do. This time it did make its way home OK but got confused with a kitchen barstool with a sloping base. It kept trying to climb it, back off, climb again for about 15 mins. It reports via the app when it has finished with a message. In the app it gives you a map of where it has cleaned.

[attachimg=1]

Having had various Roombas, I'd say it was pretty similar. My only gripe would be the Roomba gets under some stuff this cannot. But this sucks and a Roomba does not. As it lacks the twirly Roomba side brush, I'd say it has a disadvantage in the corners. But the brush roll and cyclone is as per any cordless Dyson. It ain't for heavy carpet and dog hair. On normal hard floor it is OK.

Is it worth the money?

Dyson are not aiming the new lines like hair dryers, humidifiers, air purifiers and these things at Joe Soap. They are aiming more than they did with the vacuum ranges at professionals and those with a high disposable income, likely in apartments with hard floors. People who will value the ability to schedule cleaning for when they are not home via the app.

People with a few quid will buy them to show off with. Tech heads and Dyson die-hards will love them. But as a robot to actually clean the floor? Yes, it works quite effectively for light duty use. Dyson have the ability to update the software via the app, so I expect little glitches (like the bar stool) will be ironed out as they go along and get usage reports back.

 Have you had time to give it a test on your carpet yet?????

Sounds about like I expected.
Sorry for not clarifying, a neato is another brand or robot vacuum, which uses a laser mapping system. Their brush turns in the same direction as the wheels. On roombas the rubber brush turns like this but then the main bristle brush rotates the opposite direction. This helps it to scoop up dirt.

I just thought I saw in some of dyson's videos that the brushbar in the 360 eye spins the wrong way, which might make sense considering the bin is at the front. If the brush does spin like this it would help propel dirt towards the bin I would have thought.

Looking forward to your notes on this with continued use.

I haven't got enough carpet at home to give it a meaningful test. We are mostly hard floors.

Hmm, I just saw a review video on youtube that confirms this. That may be one of the minor changes dyson made between the reveal back in 2014 and the actual launch, such as the addition of the plastic strips on the base plate that run across the brush. These weren't there at the initial reveal.

Where is the suction inlet? Is it behind or in front of the brush bar?

I am not sure now.

Ours has gone back today. It had navigational issues, it kept getting itself stuck, it randomly stops and starts, occasionally dies altogether in the middle of the floor and doesn't report all activity to the app as it should. It also is unable to navigate simple items properly like doorstops (hits it repeatedly), glass tables (hits it repeatedly) and sloped base barstools (spent 15 mins trying to climb it). In my house it also sometimes gets lost and is unable to return to base.

It would seem to me that the software needs some work yet and this item isn't yet ready for market.

At that money, the item has to be absolutely spot on. It isnt spot on, so it has gone back. Were it cheaper, I might have put up with its idiosyncrasies, and hoped later software updates would make it better. But at the money it is, clever as it is, it must be better than it is IMO.

That's a shame, but I absolutely agree with you. For that kind of money and for the 16 years it has been in development it should work properly (to coin a phrase).

Back to the roomba then

 That's a shame hopefully it's just your one  :(  by any chance did you put the base right in the corner without half a meter or clearance, as it messes up it's navigation  and makes it hard for it to Doc, and I'm going to be getting myself  :money:one of these to see what they're like ;) i've had every robot vacuum under the sun neato's irobot's and samsung which I found the latest one to be the best the vr9300 tubo but Nearo and irobot are second-best.but Let's see if this Dyson can beat that :icon_nod:

And mvacs if are you looking for a different robot i definitely suggest  One of these as I love the one I tested http://www.samsung.com/uk/consumer/home-appliances/vacuum-cleaners/robot/VR20K9350WK/EU?cid=uk_ppc_google_750-235-0904_evaluateproductpowerbot_exact_280616&ef_id=V2yh@wAABMLwPa1K:20160720225857:s      .  As the new Dyson came out I did not keep it as I wanted to test the new Dyson to see what that was like, but once I've tested the new Dyson I will make my mind up on which one is best for our home   :thumbsup:

Yes, the base was in a corner. I had read some stuff online about base location but the recommendations (like middle of the room) were simply not workable.

Having watched it, this to me looks like a software issue. I expect as Dyson gets feedback via the app from many machines they will address issues they see popping up again and again and it will improve as they put out updates remotely. But right now, for my application, it wasn't quite good enough at the money. I might try another one later on when they come down.

I seriously hope they do improve it, seems like it has a lot of promise.

In the mean time I'll muddle through with the myriad of free "broken" roombas I've acquired, and perhaps when the 360 eye is ready I can sell off all the roombas to buy one!

  i've had every robot vacuum under the sun neato's irobot's and samsung which I found the latest one to be the best the vr9300 tubo but Nearo and irobot are second-best.but Let's see if this Dyson can beat that :icon_nod:

I've wanted to try one of the new samsung robots, but even the base model is way out of my price range (heck, pretty much any robot is right now). I'm mainly interested in the cyclonic aspect of it, which I would imagine could reduce filter maintenance.
Besides, I don't trust my neato to hold up much longer. Thanks for the recommendations heidi!

I'm a software tester, tell them to send me one over, with instruction on how to terminal into it's codebase and I'll help them out...

I agree, whilst it's fun to troubleshoot stuff, not at £800! That's always the problem with first gen tech. The guy next to me in the office got a Galaxy S6 Edge the day it was released, and suffered from the software issues it had, with no fix, no custom roms and nothing on the internet short of 'its a problem'

I'll send you that tatty blue Junior back and you can make it into this if you want something to play with - Not a valid vimeo URL

 When I get mine I'll let everyone know how it does, I should get it on Monday  8) dysondc16 the Samsung will  probably do go down in price soon enough as are usually do.i will probably get 1 if they go down to around 600 or 650 as 800 is a bit much but it's dam good robot even for its £800 it's still worth it but I don't like to pay retail so yeah.

heidi, I'm with you on not paying full retail, I got my neato on sale a few years ago. If the base model samsung comes down to around the price I got the neato for I may consider one.
Hope the 360 eye works better for you. Please share how your experience goes!

MVacs, are you going to try any other robot? Or did you hang on to your old roomba?

.          Thanks and I hope you're able to get a Samsung at a decent price, have to say I still do love the personality of the neato's and they performed pretty well just if you pick up to much fine dust they lose suction unlike the Samsung and Dyson on them too it's also very easy to empty. And I'll definitely share my experience  with it and I'll post pictures if I figure out how to do it lol.and expect a Pet hair test :-X  and if the dyson doesn't work out I'll just get a Neato botvac connected as it is best Neato so far  and the most reliable ,for the meantime until the Samsung goes down in price. And when I'm done with I will either sell it or stick it down stairs.      Also like to point out I do expect the Powerbot to last for around 10 years as the old robot Samsung do and I do expect the Dyson to last around the same time period,I don't mind replacing batteries and brushes things like that. Neato's are a bit unpredictable on how they last but the Neato botvac connected is supposed to be pretty reliable compare to the old ones, so I suggest if you don't wanna wait long for the Samsung then the Neato connected would also be a great choice. Hope this helps  ;) o god I need to get a life  :biglaugh:

Thanks again heidi, I'm always looking out for good deals.

The 360 eye launched in the U.S. yesterday.

Here is a Cnet review of it. Although Cnet's reviews sometimes don't gel with my experiences it is interesting to note that the 360 eye didn't perform any better than much less expensive machines in their tests.

http://www.cnet.com/products/dyson-360-eye/

Seems to me that dyson either need to drop the price or improve the product.
