Title: Dyson DC04 Limited Edition
Post by: beko1987 on November 05, 2013, 07:46:21 pm
This started out as just another dyson to refurb and sell locally for some profit.

Collection action shot! (I don't wear that dayglo jacket for work, just in the mornings at half 5)

Didn't give it much thought during the afternoon, apart from how unusual the colour was.

Got home, and had a closer look...

Which all fell out of here, which was brilliant! Was chuffed enough with an instruction book to add to my collection!

Not too bad, seen worse etc

It was advertised as cutting out, which didn't seem too tricky to sort. It has its donut still on, so my thoughts immediatly turned to that.

Plugged it in, and turned it on and... nothing. wiggling the cable etc, nothing.

Put its fuse into this, which ran beautifully as always!

So...

(cameras wouldnt focus on it, sorry)

Ah...

Oh...

Lol...

Well, I was expecting it anyway, but its the end of the road for this cable

I then grabbed the cable from my scrap DC04, which was fine and tried that. Nothing. Swapped the switch out too - nothing. Will strip it down this week and check the motor, would a DC15 motor fit? Got a very broken one of those with a good motor!

Or, can the thermal cutout be replaced on its own on these?

Still, DC24 cable looks good!

Popped the switch housing back on, but kept the switch off as it wasa pain to get out!

Tidy. Got some little wheels somewhere I think

14 years old!

And 2 tools I found for it

In 2 minds about this now. Was going to sell for profit and keep the paperwork, however I've never seen one before, if it cleans up nicely I might add it to my collection. If so, I'll buy purple tools...

Nice write-up  Those special edition colours are infinitely more bearable than the DC07 CLIC  :))

Just a thought, could you not shorten the original cable by 6 inches or so and reuse?

If there are no other nicks/splits in the cable seems a shame to waste!

Tempting. Won't throw the cable any further for now, will get it running and then try it.

Awesome DC04! Looks much better than the DC07 clic I agree with _Russ_    :icon_nod: Should look good with your ways of refurbishing :D Good luck, I doubt its the motor though cos its a DC04 ;) or you can bench test the Motor just to confirm its faulty

We see that colour combination occasionally, but I don't recall seeing one with that meningitis logo on there.

BTW, the DC15 motor wont fit.

I am sure we could dig you out a used DC04 motor if you wanted to do it on a budget.

You can change just the thermal cut out, but that is seldom the cause of a non runner.

Ah that's a shame. If you did have any working 04 motors that would be great. Will update the thread later but the motor does look in good condition, but dead.

Sent you an email earlier with a load of requests, could you include it in that quote?

Stripped this down the other night!

Sign of previous damage. It's solid so will leave it alone!

The brushroll axle was rusted into the bearings, so some slight end damage occured on removal. Shame as its a matching brushroll. Will re-bearing it from a spare I have and see if its any good, otherwise I'll just fit the spare brushroll!

Was hoping there was something blatently wrong with this but it looks fine and spins a treat. Will swap a known working motor in for now, and try this one in a previously working machine to confirm its status!

Carried on the stripdown

This was a pain. The three tabs that lock the assembly together disintegrated in little strips. It goes back together but doesn't hold completely. Will test that it works then glue it in place I think.

And fix this, which happened when removing it  :censored:

It was easily the dirtiest 04 I;ve ever had. Luckily the DC16 cleaned up all the mess as my daughter was in bed, and would have woken up if I had used a proper vacuum!

Not pictured as my phone was dead, the plastic was washed and now dry, and I have removed nearly all the paint marks and scuffs on the housing. Aim to remove my working motor from its machine this weekend, and get it re-assembled on Sunday and see what it's like!

The above pretty much sums up why I'm goign to give DC04's a miss from now on. They are just to fragile now, and normally need things like filters repalacing rather than washing, as the neglect has been too high!

I popped to my storage unit (mums garage...) today and grabbed tne motor, brushroll and clutch from my DC04 Absolute+

And commenced re-assembly

Before I went too far (motor in with 2 top screws) I wired her up, and she sprung into life. Ithen looked at the motor that came out of it, and it bugged me that it looked so good but didn't work. So, knowing the wires work, i swapped it back in again, and sure enough it fired into life, sounding smooth and sweet.

After checking that my daugher was still asleep, and feeling happier I grabbed a beer and carried on re-assembly

More damage. It's so hidden when back together I'm not going to bother trying to glue it, I'll only end up sticking my fingers together...

Clutch friction pad wasn't too bad though. Turned it around as I usually do though tothe new side

Clutch to motor belt was gr9!

Clutch to brushroll

Luckily, I had a spare

Loads of life left, and nice that the original clutch unit could stay, as the internal lever arm is also purple! All my spare clutches are black

Good smear of grease on the centre stud, and the ball race assembly, and a few drops of oil on the bearings and hopefully that should be good as new!

Much fiddling later

Skipped ahead a bit now, but fitted the clutch cover, brushroll housing and baseplate. Cleaned all the rubbers, and basically re-assembled everything bar the hose and brushroll.

I then gave all the plastics a good cif to get rid of any paint marks, then a good polish then a good wax. Had a rolly then buffed everything to a lovely shine!

Love all the patent pendings, from simpler times!

I did notice this when re-assembling the cyclone. It's not been near any heat bar hot water in my ownership, and I didn't see it before (although tbh it does blend in fine) but odd

Dug out a good filter and housing as the old one was pretty stained even after a good wash

Should be able to finish it off tomorrow night! Brushroll is drying after being washed, plan to swap the bearings axle and end caps from the ab+, and that should be job jobbed.

And then a motor filter and original tools, but that will have to wait until payday!

Cheers! It didn't deserve to die, what with it possibly being quite rare now! Got another 13 years left in it now!

This is my DC04 absolute purple lime. Looks pretty good for its age, just managed to get the original green tools off ebay. The machine was absolutely battered, was discovered upside down under my friends stairs! The hose was torn at the wand end. Did a repair on that, changed clutch belts and fitted a dc07 brush roll. The reason why it ended up thrown under the stairs was because the wire had broken in a few places. It seems our DC04's have had exactly the same faults, oh also the wand had snapped off at the top so I replaced that. Got a DC07 off ebay for a tenner which had a broken spine but with a nearly new motor so I decided to put that in the DC04. If you require any bits and bobs I do have a few random DC04 bit and also for the DC07 :)

Oh also get some back to black (silicone spray) or wd40 in your bin, that's what gets my bins up. Apart from the dc01 that is how the bin still looks after being washed with soapy water :)

Will try WD40, cheers. I use silicone heavy car polish but it never comes up that good!

Some shopping arrived yesterday, and I grabbed a working suction valve from my spares pile, so grabbed some time to fit them to the machine.

These really are getting fragile now. Lost half a tab on the good spare I had swapping the tops over. This was killing the suction, been using it with tape over the valve.

You can't notice at all when it's on the machine, although if I see a colourcoded one for sale cheap I'll probably pick it up!

I took a plunge with the cheapest 'HEPA'* filter I've ever seen, and it's quite good. Quite apart from it's supposed hepa qualities, it looks good and will probably do just as good a job

And a bonus I didn't quite realise when I bought it it's a perfect colour match!

Much smarter

Also bought a new cyclone filter, as it didn't feel right replacing one and not the other. The old one went into my good spares box.

Lovely!

I also took the plunge on some proper tools too

Which seem unused

Also had to swap the clutch out, as the old one was clattering terribly. Found a good spare, swapped the belts over and greased it up and now it's fine.

Still some bits to potter away with, mainly:

Baseplate hose is floppier than a floppy thing, which makes it skip over carpet. Will raid the spares pile at lunchtime
The brushroll is really soft, and it shows in the performance. My spare brushroll is quite worn, although stiffer. May swap them, may buy a new purple one!
Soleplate wheels still need to arrive.

Something must be working though as I've only used it 3 times, and vacuum regularly with all manner of machines!

I've got a clutched DC07 brush roll in my DC04 and it made so much difference, the bristles on the original 04 one had gone really soft and were not really doing much to the carpet. my DC04 has now retired though :)

A new internal hose and brushroll might be a future purchase, their letting the whole machine down!

Oh Beko, I've given my DC11 a mini strip down tonight. I've done the bin with wd40 and took a picture for you to see how it has come up.

Oh also you know your cyclone is melted, an absolute purple and limes cyclone would surely Match. Just change the handle so that it's got the limited edition on it still. Assuming it's the same shade of purple ???

That DC11 is new, don't kid us. Seriously that's great, was it very hazy before, or did you get lucky and get a clean one under all the dirt?

No, their two shades of purple, so that won't work. Leaving that for now, the amount of stuff I still need to buy for it is too much as it is, definatly no profit in this one! I also keep using it to clean out other machines, so the cyclone needs a re-wash now!

I use my miele to do other machines out with, I have a late junior I want you to identify. I'm going to get it out the attic now. Will add some pictures on this post for you so it's easy to find. Shall not be long :)

That is a very lovely Turbopower Junior. Looks fairly new, if you post the serial number up I could date it for you.

Do you have the instructions? If you ever run out of rroom to keep it...

I don't have instructions for it I'm afraid, to be honest I'm not a fan of the machine it freaks me out for odd reason. I'm thinking of putting it on ebay to sell it on and give it a loving home as it just sits in my attic at the moment :(

My new internal hose finally showed up

Hopefully this will make it work on the floor again, compared to the old one this one is pracitcally rigid! Will strip the brushroll housing out and clean up the pivot points as well just to be sure, and clean the cyclone again as I've been using it to clean out other vacs as I refurb them!
