i recently picked up a 'dead' C3 for a few quid as it had all the tools and thought, at the very least, the spares were worth the investment.
i took it apart, and sure enough, the motor etc was filthy. After a partial disassembly and good clean, i got it started, but with a strong burning smell.
To cut a long story short, i have come to the conclusion that the best action is to replace the motor.
The existing one is 408-42/2.
I have read a few posts about compatibility of non genuine motors, and wondered if other miele motors would work, as i cant seem to find a 408-42/2 at the moment.
Is there a list somewhere of motors which I could use ?

It turned out that the servo motor had failed some time ago, but the customer had continued using it on carpets for several weeks, even though it was making a hideous noise. What seems to have happened is that the brushroll was digging in on carpets (due to the higher resistance) and stalling. But the motor kept turning, and this made the front drive belt strip most of it's teeth.
Not quite sure why the brushroll stall device was not kicking in and shutting the motor down, but once I replaced the servo motor and the small front belt it was OK again.

P.S. I do like and use parts from M-Vacs, they are always good quality but those little white sweets in a plastic wrapper you sent as a bonus with my last order taste terrible - a bit like soap 
Are those silca gel?  We've done nothing with Air Wraps except change the flex up to now. You're a pioneer. Did you solve it?

The only person I know that would be able to fix that board is Ryevac. But it may not be economically viable. Miele are notorious in that you have to swap like with like. And as Macman said, parts are very expensive. Used spares are the way to go with those.

But do I also need to order a replacement PCB main board as well? It's the later type, NPPSTXSNM-3. Is it possible that both have failed simultaneously: could the servo motor have blown and taken out the main board PCB with it?

Much like a DC41, and there is strip down topics here on those.
Before you do, take the head off, put a meter on the two connectors from the machine, you are looking for circa 320v DC. Try and replicate the fault while watching the meter. That will tell you if it is the loom. It probably is, but that will tell you for sure before you strip it down.
