Title: Dyson DC07 Service & Workshop Manual Now Available in Paperback
Post by: Angus Black on October 13, 2011, 02:03:53 am
So at last, my book The Unofficial Dyson DC07 Workshop Manual is finished and available in paperback.

Your Dyson DC07 need never die. There is nothing that can go wrong with your machine, which if you are practically inclined, and have a fundamental grasp of home electrics, you cannot source the parts and repair yourself for a fraction of the cost of a new Dyson. More importantly, armed with this book, you will have the information you need to get it right the first time and have your Dyson up and running again quickly – without breaking the bank.

Here is the chapter list:

This is one of the sites buyers of the book are directed to in the resources chapter to complete their education. So you can expect quite a few new members because of it. I hope all you guys here will encourage them and guide them as necessary. New members will be dripping in over many months as the book finds its way into the many distribution channels that exist across the world.

There are one or two people from here who have read it already; some because they were instrumental in the creation process and one or two whose experience and opinion I particularly value.

I thought it a good idea that any new folks or any of the many reading guests (who always number many fold more than active members on a forum) see opinions and more information about what they may buy before they actually do so.

On this thread, I also welcome guys who are book buyers, who have found this site because of the book. If you are an Unofficial Dyson DC07 Workshop Manual buyer, and have just landed here, why not say hello and tell me what you thought? I would very much appreciate feedback or a review from you on this site if you have a few moments to spare. Your feedback is important and tells me if you enjoyed the book, found it useful, and if my hard work putting it all together was worth it.

I have been given this dedicated topic here on the unofficial Dyson discussion forums where you are welcome to give me feedback. You can also tell me about any errors or omissions that you feel should be corrected or included in the next edition. You can even drop by just to say hello!

Note: This book is unofficial. That means it is not authorised, approved, or endorsed by Dyson Limited. The information contained in this book may differ from the opinion of Dyson Limited. Working on your Dyson vacuum cleaner as described in this book will probably invalidate any Dyson warranty you may have. There are one or two people from here who have read it already; some because they were instrumental in the creation process and one or two whose experience and opinion I particularly value.

I must be one of those.  ;)

We were pleased to help out with a few photos for this project. I also had an opportunity to review a pre-published copy and make a few comments.

I was very impressed with the book. It was long overdue. It is factual and helpful without being overbearing. It is instructive without being condescending. I haven't read anything that I think is bad or unwise advice. It basically says pretty much what I'd say if I had the time, patience or creative ability to write a book myself.

As such, we are pleased to stock it. We took delivery of our first small batch today (we have more on the way), and although you will find it on Amazon, Tesco and all the big book sites, I think we have the best deal at just £4.99 including UK postage and packing. For those UK readers who have landed here who don't want to wade through any more pages to get one, I have made a button below you can use to order a copy now.

I did that tonight. Copies to the US are $19.99 including postage.

Also, we are now running an ad for the book to your left. From Angus's site, it can be bought in pounds, euros or dollars with world-wide delivery.

Angus: we sent our first one to the US today. Not bad after only a few days on Google. I am sure it will bring us many new members too.

As well as on our shop pages, I listed this book on our eBay account. I wanted to share some of the feedback that we got on that site the last two weeks.

Feedback from one we sent to Australia:

Quote
I just wanted to say a very big 'thanks' for the book on my Dyson.   It arrived earlier today and I've just had a quick look and I've already spotted a few little gems on how to sort out the poor suction with my machine.  Thanks again, this book looks like exactly what I was after and I also appreciate the prompt service, regards,

David

One of the parts sellers has a video on swapping a clutch. The bit where he pops off the clutch knob is here:
I hope that helps.  :tiphat:

Dyson don't licence those drawings for publications that are sold Steve. To use them without such permission would be breach of copyright.

Dyson are known to be particularly litigious with those who abuse their intellectual property (they don't always win but they have the cash to try).

Even on sites like this, we have to be quite careful about what we use and how. We can use a certain amount of stuff under fair use rules. Some stuff we must credit them for (their lawyers once told me) and some stuff we simply cant use at all and expect them not to object. We use very few of their images for this reason. Its way easier to err on the side of caution with imagery belonging to those known to be litigious. On a website, you can simply take an image down if the owner objects. You cant do that with a book.  ;)

I know that Angus sought advice from an intellectual property lawyer prior to publication of the book. I know some changes were made as a result of that advice. I suspect that if such drawings could be in there, they would be.

Welcome to the forum BTW.  :tiphat:

Hi everyone,
I'm taking my first DC07 apart as an excersise ( I was given it as 'not picking up') before my wife will let me loose on ours.

I got as far as taking the motor out but was having terrible trouble getting getting the unit out of the skeleton until I then saw a video on the dyson medic website which shows 5 screws to remove rather than the 4 in the book, p65! Is everyone already aware of this error? I've seen no mention of it anywhere else.

Apart from that, the book is fantastic!

Where is the fifth screw you refer to Daz?

You are incorrect that this is an error Biggazdixon, there are only four screws required to release the motor housing from the chassis:

[attachimg=1]

The fifth screw Matt in the video you mention refers to is the one holding in the part numbered 32 on this diagram:

[attachimg=2]

He is incorrect that this needs to be removed to release the motor casing. He may choose to do it that way, and that is likely why he mentions five screws. I find the job perfectly easy to do simply removing the four, as I am sure do most others.

Thanks for the feedback on the topic here. Glad you enjoyed the book.

Thanks for that clarification Angus.
I have to say that before I took the last screw out I couldn't get the motor out at all, that's why I went to your website and hence found the video. Once I'd taken the 5th screw out the motor literally fell out so as long as there's no harm done that's how I think I'll do it in the future too.

Got my copy yesterday, best value book I've bought since Mark Twain's 'Yankee at the Court of King Arthur' and that was free.
Brilliantly clear and easy to follow. I'll be changing the HEPA filter on our DC07 asap..

It still sells really well.

We lent a refurbished blue and silver DC14 to a photography studio a few weeks ago that will feature in the photos in the DC14 manual that is along soon I gather.

I hear the DC24 one will be after that and is already in progress.

There is still debate as to if the DC14 manual cover should feature a girl again, or something else like >>this<< (https://manchestervacs.co.uk/DysonForum/index.php/topic,337.msg3685.html#msg3685), or maybe a pristine DC14 in the foreground and several in various states of decay behind it.

I reckon a full set, from the dc01 to current would make a lovely bookshelf display!

I'd be your cover bloke, but I have a face even radio doesn't want...
