Title: Dyson Abandon Support for the DC16 Already!
Post by: MVacs on September 28, 2015, 10:47:30 pm
It would appear Dyson have already abandoned support for the DC16 hand held.

From their site:

They were never terribly good in my opinion (indeed, I am not a fan of the cordless range generally). Why we have never sold them. But I am surprised that they are dumping all support for them so early.

I'm surprised they ditched the DC11 before the DC08, the DC08 TW and the DC07

It seems they have no obligation on spares supply:

Quote
For how long do manufacturers have to provide genuine spare parts?

The short answer is that there is currently no legislation that states that spare parts have to be available for any set period of time, either in UK or EU legislation.

What this means is that if you buy any equipment such as a compressor, dryer or pneumatic tool, the manufacturer or brand owner has no responsibility to ensure that spare parts are available for any set period at all, and you have no recourse in law to challenge a genuine spare part not being available.

The reason for the lack of availability could be that the manufacturer has decided not to support the product or that the support will only last for a finite period of time. The part may also be outsourced, and that source could eventually dry up.

Therefore if you are told that a spare part is no longer available, chances are there is little if anything that you can do about it, even on a machine or piece of equipment that is only just outside of its manufacturer’s warranty.

The 'six year rule'

There has been some speculation that the 'six year rule', as it is commonly known under The Sale of Goods Act, would affect this but, in reality, this is unlikely as that rule pertains to defects in the goods from new, not the fact that you cannot get the spare part to repair it.  So that avenue would likely prove to be fruitless.

The manufacturer will endeavour to provide functional components so that equipment may be serviced throughout the product’s expected life. Different products have different life spans – and even two identical products can have varying life spans, depending on usage. If components are not available, they will discuss and agree an alternative solution with you – if this involves discounting the price of a replacement product, account will be taken of the use you have had of the original product up to that time. Remember some parts are manufactured by other companies and the manufacturers themselves will not have total control of the component parts supply past the cessation of production.

It wouldnt surprise me if the do what Microsoft did with XP for the DC07 and possibly 14's, arguably their best selling, most popular cleaners, they wont kill them as quickly I bet.

I wont start worrying about my DC16 yet, I imagine all they would have done if the motor went pop was replace the whole unit anyway, so no big loss having to do that anyway (I wouldn't, it would go in the bin/I'd try a bit harder to get into it and not worry about breaking it...)

That's bad  :D

Not to surprised about the dc11, they weren't that popular I believe, perhaps its the same with the dc16?

Microsoft support for Vista ends next year, one of the shortest lived products from them, same kind of thing maybe? Least popular shortest support.

DC33 was very popular and its been manufactured for like 4 years, Dc24/25 sold very well and lasted 7 rears I think, like the dc04/14

Oh well! It seems parts for the dc16 are still available over here for the moment.
I know i'm in the minority here, but I actually really like my dc16, much better than most other cordless handvacs I've used. Kinda funny that it launched about eight years ago and yet no one has really tried to emulate the cyclone technology in a handheld, only going as far as a single cyclone with a pleated filter inside. IMO this gives the dc16 a big advantage over most traditional dustbusters.

I like my DC16, it's the best dustbuster I've ever had. Plus Eva can use it now she can lift it up, so cleans up after herself! I run mine without the foam filter which increases the airflow slightly, havent noticed any more/less dust the other side of it yet. We use ours for catching daddy longlegs mainly at this time of year, can get hundreds in the bin!

I want either a DC44,DC59 Animal or the funky red V6 Total clean ;D CBA dragging out the uprights all the time, we vacuum daily like twice a day

Beko, that's great that your little helper can clean up after herself now! You also bring up another good point, with the cyclone system any insects or other nasty things are simply sent to the bottom of the bin ready to empty. The idea of having to pick such things out of the filter on other handvacs is not one I fancy.
Parwaz, I have had a dc59 for about a year now, and it really is a good performer. If you want the best carpet performance though, you need one with the larger powerhead like the total clean. It cleans much better than the dc44's head. One word of warning, the bins really don't hold a lot and it sounds like you have a fairly high traffic home. I know when I ran mine around the whole house it always needed an empty after.
