As promised, here is a picture comparison between the British dyson dc02 and the Canadian Fantom lightning. I took loads of pictures this morning so this is going to be a long one. Hope its interesting to somebody!
It's going to take a long time to get them up, i'm having to manually re-size them all! :(
First, here are some exterior shots of the main units.

You can see that the fantom is actually a little taller than the dyson.

You will also note the different top mold and handle designs.

Now for the guts....
[attachimg=1]
With both machines open, you can really see how much fantom messed with the internal designs.

And this is the, uh, "pre motor filter" :'(

I have a LOT of pictures of the internals...
[attachimg=1]
It looks like fantom even went so far as to change the orientation of the motor!
[attachimg=2]
[attachimg=3]
The internal ducting looks similar

[attachimg=5]
They also made sure the bin cradle was different enough so the bins would not be interchangeable. Sorry some of these pics are a little blurry.

wow, they really did start from scratch didnt they!

Well, that's all for a little while. I think I made the site mad, it's not loading my replies anymore. Will keep trying later.

Wow and I thought the Dc02 was massive!
Thank you for the pictures, enjoyed seeing the differences- really appreciate it :)

Me too.
A great comparison of machines that are not as identical as we thought.

Just noticed a filter cleaning reminder/light on the main body next to the bin! If that indicator works that's really cool and I am impressed with the design ;D
-
Still got more...I have some better ones of the cyclones and the fantom's tool set. I'm having trouble posting pics though! I get the indication my pictures are uploading, then "waiting for manchestervacs.co.uk", then a blank white page!

Please send me screenshots of any errors you have, we have *really* expensive UK hosting that is backed up on the cloud and all sorts. We pay a lot of money to ensure that this site doesn't break. Our tech support isn't 3 days later and a bloke in India on a chat screen, we have blokes called Nigel and Justin we can call up and say "Oy, fix this....."

Here are the small tools. They are vaguely similar, but also very different.

And here are the cyclones, again you can see that fantom significantly changed the design.

Fantom actually made some positive changes here, including a dedicated handle for the cyclone and a notch to help locate the cyclone when putting it back into the bin. Looks like they use the same release valves though.

So which performs the best? That pre motor filter is shocking :angryman:

The wand and powerhead are unique to this machine.
The pn has a height adjustment and status light on top.
[attachimg=1]
The brushbar isn't bad, and does an okay job.
[attachimg=2]
The pn has two pedals at the back, the lower one reclines the head and the upper one releases the wand. That lower pedal is very fragile.
[attachimg=3]
The wand is all one piece, and is a bit on the heavy side. The lower neck of the wand is another weak point, often causing connection issues with the powerhead. I have found a few of these locally and every single one has been missing the powerhead. I assume it failed before the machine and was tossed.

Madrat, I have not been able to use the dc02 at full power for myself and so can't fairly compare them yet. From my observations though I imagine the fantom would perform better on carpets solely thanks to the powerhead. From the video of beko's knackered dc02 clear it looks like the dc02 has much better suction than the fantom.

:thumbsup: That wand looks so cheap and nasty.
