Title: DC39 burning smell, whining noise and dark residue inside motor housing.

Hello everyone,

I have a Dyson DC39 that I have enjoyed using for the last few years but recently I have noticed a strange sound after I push the power button after vacuuming as the motor spins down. It's a mix of grinding and whining. a few uses after I heard the noise I smelled a burning smell. Thinking it was some hair caught in the brush-bar, I cleaned that out but the smell still persisted after use. I disassembled the vacuum and noticed that there is a fine dark residue on the inside of the motor housing and inside of the HEPA filter (I have attached pictures) and my question is, is my motor going out or do I just need new carbon motor brushes?

You need a motor; replacing brushes seldom works. Ours are >>here<< (https://manchestervacs.co.uk/Dyson/DC41-motor-YV-16K24F) in case of need.

Yep,  by the time you smell the burning the damage is done.  You can either limp it along for a while longer until it goes properly,  or pop a new motor in whilst you are only a step or two away looking at your pictures the filter looks fine,  I wouldn't worry about replacing that in its current state

I suspected it was the motor. I contacted Dyson and I am still covered by my warranty. They set up a service appointment with a local authorized service center and the moment I told the guy at the counter that I smelled a burning smell, he confirmed that it was a motor and should be covered under warranty. I will hear back from them in about a week. Hopefully I won't need to pay anything after that, but thanks to this site I can do all of that myself.

Thats handy then! Maybe you should push for a new filter too if the dyson guy or girl is sound,  say your concerned that it may be melted or damaged etc!

Just don't tell them you've had it apart,  and don't have my dc39 rebuild thread open on the pc when they come round...

I will be asking that very question when they call me. I did not mention the fact that I took the vacuum apart and with Dyson's lack of warranty stickers on any of the screw holes, there's no way for them to know. I wore gloves expecting a lot of dirt and wiped away any signs of finger marks. I doubt they will notice.
