How to replace dc41 yoke assembly
« on: October 01, 2013, 02:29:51 AM »
Hi there, a forum lives and dies by its community so here is my contribution.

I recently had my dc41 yoke assembly break and Manchester Vacs supplied me with a new one, here's how to fit it.

The first and most important tip I can give is do not do this job on the glass dining room table, my wife pointed this tip out and continues to do so every 15 minutes or so.  ;D

You can see in the picture the yoke assembly I'm about to fit, it's quite a big piece.

After removing the filter cover wheel and the filter itself you're left looking at this on the left hand side of the dc41. The bit in the middle of the hole in three pieces is the broken bit of the yoke assembly, undo the five 'star drive' screws you can see in the picture.

You'll then be looking at the below so you also need to take out the two silver screws by lining up the holes.

Remove the right hand ball cover with long nosed pliers to unscrew the cover and the internal plastic nut, then turning the vacuum on its back you will need to remove the six screws underneath, four are easily visible in the next picture but two others are quite deeply recessed. The four you can see easily here actually hold a fitting inside the vacuum (see later pic) but for disassembly they need to come out and now is a good time.

Here are the two recessed screws, you will need a star drive allun key for these unless you have a very thin star drive... erm... driver.

There is another hidden screw, it's black and annoyingly a smaller size than all the other screws, very small and again a star drive. It is shown dead centre of the next pic. Also collect that washer on the spindle now before you lose it like I did.

Two more screws, they're at a funny angle for a driver but they weren't difficult.

Now with a bit of persuasion you should be able to remove the assembly and you'll be left looking at the below, difficult to get a good picture of this but the bit the hose is attached to is the bit that the four screws mentioned earlier were holding onto.

Reassembly

Firstly before you screw anything together remember you're screwing into plastic so as soon as you feel any genuine resistance stop. Trying to over tighten will strip the plastic straight away, none of the screws need any real pressure to be fully done up.

So, first thing is to attach the hose fitting to the inside of the yoke assembly

After that it is just the reverse of taking it apart, make sure to locate the right hand side 'hinge and spindle' properly as it has lugs to grip the main body. That sentence will make sense when you look at  yours.

I hope this is of some help to someone and thanks again to Manchester vacs for hosting this forum, helping me find what was wrong and then sourcing a replacement for me.

Top notch tutorial, thanks.

We have ordered another one or two of these so will be keeping them in when they come.

Edit: Now here: DC41 Ball Yoke Assembly.

I have a dc41, that the yoke assembly broke where it attaches to the ball shell. So, the ball shell is off, and I can't get the broken connector removed from the ball shell. It also doesn't look the same as the pictures that you have posted here. There seems to be a clip inside the connector, but I can't figure out how to get that out.

Hi

It's possible they have changed the design a little, my DC41 is probably three years old now. The connector you're referring to, is it in any of the pictures? I didn't need to touch any spring clips or similar everything I needed to undo is in the post.
Do you have a picture or is the broken part in this exploded diagram https://manchestervacs.co.uk/DysonForum/index.php/topic,1555.0.html

I had the exact same problem.  I called the parts supplier and they assured me that it can screw off.  You need to grip inner metal part with pliers and turn outer black plastic part with snap-ring pliers or needle nose pliers.

Great instructions!  The part that had me stumped was the last two screws holding the white piece attached to yoke on filter side.  I noticed your yoke broke on filter side.  My yoke broke on other side.  Myself and others ran into the problem of removing the old screw out of the non-filter-side ball shell.  It can be done, you just need the right pliers.

Thanks!

I found this tutorial incredibly useful in attempting a repair of a DC-41 ball (non-filter side). Just registered to say thank you to all the contributors.

I did find it difficult to put it all back together again though - it didn't seem quite as easy to just reverse the instructions.

I later found that you must recline the vacuum all the way back or the yoke assembly will fight you and not let the parts slot into the correct position. The white gear/lever was particularly troublesome but with the vacuum reclined, I could see the slots the gears would catch on which helped guide things better.

Anyway all fixed now so thank you all. Still not sure about the locking mechanism for having it stand up - it was never great to begin with but seems to need a bit more help now, with a kick to the wheels to get them to lock in place. Perhaps there is a tweak needed there.

Great work friend! Thank you!!

This is the part I am stumped on..

"Remove the right hand ball cover with long nosed pliers to unscrew the cover and the internal plastic nut,"

I need to pull one apart to access the motor in order to lubricate it's bearings or replace it with a used motor if too damaged.
Haven't gotten that ball cover off before.. all the ones I have in my possession are already broken off and even after looking inside underneath the cover, I do not see that internal plastic nut. Any help would be appreciated, thanks!
