Noisy DC23
« on: December 17, 2013, 05:45:27 PM »
I've got a DC23 Allergy that's cleaned up nicely but makes a horrible whine once switched on.

Visually everything looks ok and suction is excellent so at a bit of a loss  :'(

Any suggestions? Filter looks ok but wondering if it's not seating properly - don't have a spare to rule that out though!

Hoping someone might have come across this before  :tiphat:

Did you take out and bench test the motor?

Debris down the intake is the usual suspect if you didn't.

Interesting thanks for that  Yes I had the motor out to check it ran good but didn't think/know to check the intake.

Bit of a pain as not the easiest cylinder to take apart but will have another look tomorrow!

We find kinds tend to stuff things down the intake quite often. Felt tips and crap like that makes odd noises sometimes.

Take out the hepa filter, If it has the moulded rubber seals on either end then get a new one. The rubber seals can leak air after a while. The  new hepa filters with sponge type rubber on either end replacing the moulded rubber seals they no longer whine like this with the new one.

Brilliant, thanks for that  ;)

I'll have a look and let you know which style I've got - can believe the cost to replace though, even trade prices  :o

Yes I have the old style HEPA filter - removed the filter, switched on and the noise disappeared

What I did do though was pull the larger rubber seal up so it sat right at the top the groove and when I refitted it like this, the whine was still gone.

I think just pulling the rubber seal out 1-2mm was enough to make it air tight again.

Will run it for a few days just to check the whine doesn't reappear but hopefully sorted without the expense of a new filter.
