Are wand caps essential?

Hi - I am in the process of rebuilding a DC Root8 and a DC07 and a DC07 Monster...
None of the machine have wand caps... are wand caps important for the machine to function and if so why? They seem to pick up OK without... Do not having them affect suction in any way?
Thanks.

Wand caps are not essential to the vacuum function, however they do stop your top being sucked into the tube while cleaning. Had to fit a new one on my DC07 recently because I got fed up of my t-shirt being sucked in.
