DC40 Only working with brush bar turned on
« on: September 28, 2014, 07:56:36 PM »
Please can anyone help.  Our hoover has decided that it will only switch on if you turn the brush bar on and its not in the upright mode.

Basically as soon as you click the handle upright it turns off no matter if the button pushed or not.

When it is in the hoovering mode if you try to use the on off button it makes no difference, it is turning on and off with the press of the brush bar button on or off.

I am presuming a short circuit or something somewhere?????

To be clear, you are saying the main ball motor will only run simultaneously with the brushroll motor when the machine is reclined?

You are not mistaking the brushroll motor running when the machine is reclined as it should but the main motor not? Which would be more usual.

If I'm honest I'm not sure about the main ball rotor.
All I know is the on/off switch doesnt do anything.  Only pressing the brush bar button on turns the hoover on and it only comes on when reclined. If you put upright when running it turns itself off.

Sounds like the main motor has gone kaput. The motor you are hearing is the brushroll motor.

The machine wants stripping down and checking. Is it still under Dyson warranty?

Will get onto dyson tomorrow.  Its still under warranty.

Last thing i needed is a kaput vacuum after having a load of building work done and a hairy dog and a baby due in two weeks. :)

Suppose I need to find the paperwork for the vacuum now. Hmmm that could be interesting.
I remember trying to register online with Dyson but I think I had an issue and I dont know if it did in the end.

Give them a date [ish] and where you bought it. Say you have the receipt. They never ask to see it.

The DC40 isn't old enough to be out of warranty. Remind them of that in case of any issue.

Great thanks.
I know when and where I bought so hopefully will be good enough.

You don't need a receipt. You need (at most) proof of purchase, which you will have anyway unless you paid cash.
