DC01 brush belt spindle

I'm after some advice. I have an old Dyson DC01. I am trying to change the brush bar belt but have noticed the spindle it sits on looks rusty. Is there anything I can use to clean it off or lubricate it or would it cause the belt to perish?

I normally use a narrow brass wire brush against it whilst it is on, if it still feels rough after - then i use some p800 paper to polish it up.
Watch your fingers too.

Also, don't lubricate the spindle.
Those spindles are often rusty, but they tend to be clean at the bit the belt actually runs on.

I don't fancy risking my fingers with a running motor. Perhaps once I get a new belt it will come off. I got given it by my dad 2nd hand (or even 4th or 5th) and it's the Ranulph Fiennes one so don't want to give up on it just yet. I'd take it to be serviced but as it's so old I doubt anyone still would and definitely not in Jersey.

In that case use a long emery board (that you would do your nails with) to get the worst off the spindle.
I myself wouldn't put a new belt on a corroded or gunky spindle.
