How do you remove the motor retainer without breaking it?

The DC33 is an upright model based on DC07/DC14 I cant think of any clips holding the motor , Do you mean DC39 cylinder type that has clips ?

Thin screwdriver under the tabs, heat it with a hairdryer beforehand.
The only way to fail is not to try.
