Brush will only turn if grey button is held down
« on: June 08, 2020, 05:09:09 PM »
Hi Friends

On our DC24 we need to hold the grey button down continually for the brushead to turn. Can anybody help with what the problem may be please?

It sounds like the switch. And that switch is the same as a standard Dyson power switch.

Thanks for your response. Perhaps the springs are too weak. There is nothing else that could go wrong as the switches are perfect. Could a weak spring could be the cause?

You mean you've stripped it and checked the operation of the switches?

Hi Friend
I am glad you came back to me on that.  I have confused the red and grey buttons with switches!!  I have only had the buttons off and it is they that appear in tact apart from the larger spring appearing a little weak.  I have not checked the two switches operated by the buttons. Perhaps if I replace those it will allow the brush to turn the when  the machine is in the down position and being used on carpet.  Perhaps the one operated by the grey button is faulty and doesn't stay on unless I keep my finger pressed down on it.  Please excuse my ignorance but thanks for your help.

Is it straight forward please to replace the switches on a DC24 ? This could sove the problem of the brush bar only turning if I keep my finger pressing the gray button down.  The buttons are fine and I have re-set etc. The suction is good. It is just that the brush doesn't turn on carpet unless the grey button is held down. Can anybody else advise me please?

99% the problem is what I said already. Observe:

Replace the left hand switch when you have established it is mechanically faulty.

Beaten to it but will add my pics too.
remove 3 torx screws from rear
ensure power switch is in on position
remove front cover
replace beater switch if necessary
ensure buth switches in down posistion
refit cover
refit 3 torx screws.
I always ensure swiches in down position so red and grey buttons dont foul them when refitting cover, probably doesn't matter tbh.
