No suction at beater bar
« on: January 22, 2012, 05:58:20 PM »
Bringing an old DC03 back to life and although plenty suction from handle wand when used upright I find that the machine does not pick up at all when used in normal carpet cleaning mode. Have checked all seals and passageways with no apparent blockages. Plenty suction from outlet where hose "plugs" into bottom of machine but this does not seem to be getting through to beater bar area. Rubber flap valve that controls wand suction is in place as o
is "O" ring that seals bottom of wand tube when this is clicked into its unused position at the handle. Filters are clear - I have removed the inside paper from filters but retained the empty cartridges so that they can be used in position and make proper seals but this does not help. Will need to put in new filters if I can cure the suction problem. Checked an rechecked hoses and fitting of all removeable parts. No go and I don't know what I may have missed.

I am reliably advised that the problem will be most likely with the swivelling cassette mechanism at the bottom of the hose.

If it has been stripped down it is possible it has been reassembled the wrong way round.

Of course this assumes the clutch is working ok and the soleplate is fitted correctly.

Thanks. IHave checked swivel as you suggest but as this has not been dismantled I found no fault with it. I must say howver that this time after removing and refitting swivel I felt a slight suction across the beater bar. Could this problem be the result in my removing the inners of both filters leaving an empty filter shell to enable the housing to be reassembled. Perhaps there is now a faulty seal in the filter assembly somewhere, leading to this loss of suction. I don't suppose the machine will run at all well without any filters?

With no filters installed, it will pull dirt through the motor.

The switch over valve between the back hose and the cleaner head is in that cassette mechanism. If suction at the back hose is strong (being a three, the use of 'strong' might be ambitious), you need to examine what that cassette does while reclining the machine.

Thanks to all. Sorted  ;D with suction restores at both wand and beater bar. Only restored after removing insides of both filters. Will not operate like this though because of dirt passing through motor (and goodness knows where else. Will now get replacement filters and put machine back in use. It is over 25 years old so I can't complain. Have also brought a D07 back to full working order simply be checking/removing filters. Washable filters easily done but HEPA less so. Currently stripped ou inside og Hepa nd fitted it with home made pad.Seems to work fine. Thanks again, well pleased

So it was the cassette then?

BTW, the filters are quite expensive for those. I can likely dig you out some inexpensive previously enjoyed ones in case of need?

I am so frustrated with my Dyson.  I thought it would be problem free.  Living alone in the middle of no where and being a widow with 3 DOGS it's driving me crazy not to have my vacuum up and running!!  Is there a place on this site where I can see a diagram so I can take this AMIMAL apart myself.  It's clogged, no suction from the bottom and kicking out dust when the brush is spinning....SOS!!!

What model of Dyson do you have? Are we talking about a DC03?
