DC25 brush bar motor failure.
« on: July 13, 2013, 07:26:47 pm »
I had an intermittent motor failure on a DC25 brush bar. Having checked the brush bar switch, the reset switch and the upright switch I opened up the brush bar but did not remove the motor. I then carefully prised out the brushes from the motor and the second brush showed pitting on its face. It appears that rust dust from the brush spring was stopping the free movement of the brush. Cleaning the inside of the brush housing and gently using some emery paper on the face of the brush seems to have done the trick.

Hope this helps.

Not many people have the patience to repair those Roger. They are really fiddly aren't they?

2015 Edit: This is an old topic, but for the purposes of completeness, we now have these motors >>here<< and the fitting tutorial is located >>here<<.

Anyone with any sense would have bought one of your newly available replacement motors. The repair did not take long, once I had finally worked out what the problem was, but your are right, it is very fiddly. These motors were not designed to have their brushes removed or even touched. The task required an illuminated magnifier, watchmaker's tools and a degree of dexterity. Thus the task was irrational, but satisfying. Let us see how long the repair lasts...
