Numatic Henry HVR200 (1996) - Restoration!

Next on my list of things to write up is the 1996 Numatic Henry I got from Dilys at Autovac, when the shop sadly closed down
It looked really good, but was hiding a bit of a secret...
//www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Sj4OMw1RCY
For some reason, the motor fan was completely smashed up!
Which probably explains why it was in the back room of a vac repair shop! Pic of the label for prosperity
Then some new parts were obtained and eventually it was time to be refurbished!
First thing to do was flip it over and remove the outer screws
To get the hat off
The handle pops out on one side and twists to get the other end unhooked

The remains of a PAT label still there
Cord reel next
Undo the 3 screws
And the cap comes off
On one this old the winder knob is also just one screw
The mains cable screws can be removed now
And the flex removed
The wiring information label was still there! properly battered after 20+ years of being inside the reel but there none the less!
The plug has a hint of not being original about it

Was a nice plug though
It came apart very nicely indeed
Switches now
The supressor was blown too
Everything can be unplugged
And the switch removed
Power socket and it's wires come out now
Next to come out are the wheels that help the cord reel spin
Now we get filthy and undo the motor housing itself...

It was like death itself inside
The sound insulation was sticky with carbon dust
Up under this plate is the cord reel contacts. The plate twists off
Revealing the next part of the loom
With all that unplugged, the cord reel contacts themselves can be pushed out from below
Body clips removed
And we can remove the motor
Rubber gaskets off
And we can refurbish this motor that's inside of it, I can't remember when or why I fitted it but meh, it needs a good rebuild

Fancase off
Fan and Washers off
Air guide removed
We now need to remove the carbon brush holders from the coil wires
Then the holders from the motor
Then with 2 last bolts we can knock the rest apart and wash half and leave half dry
Moving down to the bottom half now, and we can remove the really nice filter
Toss the bag
And pull the bag connector off

The front wheels can come off now
And the back
Everything is now apart, it all got washed, dried and polished! Whilst that all happened I washed the motor fan...
That's just boiling water and washing up liquid! Took 3 of those and a swill in tardis to get it clean! The sound deadening was no better, several buckets of this and a trip through the washing machine before I classed it as good enough
Then with everything polished
And buffed
I popped the dust cap off the motor bearings
And added fresh grease

Everything was ready for re-assembly
And I started with the motor as it's still a filthy job even after cleaning
Coil goes onto the bottom plate
2 of the coil wires had broken and weren't long enough so some scrap cable was procured
And soldered to extend the tails
The armature and top can go on now
Carbon brush holders are reconnected to either where they should be
or my bodge
Either way it works well!

Time to make it move some air now
Spacer
Washer
Fan washer and nut
Fan case tapped back on
Back to the bottom now, for the rear wheels to go back on
Then the front
Bag holder pushes in nicely
And that's the base done!

Slap the filter on
And we can move onto the top part, starting with the bottom of the top
Fancase motor seal goes in first
Then the motor sits on there. I cleaned up the thermal cut out sensor
And attached the wires
Then fiddled with the top seal which is easier to do before you plug the wires in...
That part done, we need to refit the cord reel rings to the top of the motor housing
Line up all the tabs and push down

From the underside, the wires can be plugged back in
Then the cover put back on
The now fabric feeling sound deadening can go back in now
Then, once the cables are fixed into their routing holes, the whole lot can be pushed down. Then lifted, as it only fits fully if the top motor seal is correctly orientated...
Little drop of grease on the cord reel wheels makes them nice and quiet
And stops them falling out if you tip the machine up
Switch and PTO socket wired up (that supressor can't have been blown as there it is now! I must be thinking of another Numatic...)
All the clean shiny wires can be covered up now with this
And we can turn our attention back to the cord reel, and wire the flex back up, and route the cable

With the top and knob fitted the cord reel can be dropped into place
Then the hat and handle are fitted. Job done etc, I also fixed an hose for it
And gave it al la nice coat of wax, at the same time it seems as doing the ManchesterVacs Hoover Junior...
Only 30 years between the two!
And it looked fab. HOWEVER, the eagle eyed amongst you might have noticed the lack of tools. Well, a thing happened to fix that
And the motor sounded terrible so I got these too (still got the tube of grease too (04/2019 I did this), half left now...)

I fitted the bearings first
And it ran much better! Time to refurbish the tools
And find a more age-appropriate hose end
The wands are very clean

But was the floortool as clean?
Yep!
No rust, just dirt
Brush layer was nice and clean too
Bar a bit of dirt here and there it was a very nice floor tool. Until I realised both centre standoffs had snapped off, which is common on these heads...
Bit of rust here
And the print has faded from the pedal legends
But, not bad still. It all got washed and slightly polished
I glued the standoffs back on

Put the bristles back into the brand new old style dusting brush (this came in a box of KIrby Heritage tools IIRC...)
If not brand new then very little use
I slid the brushes onto the old Upholstry tool I found for it
And... chucked a new cheap pattern crevice tool at it as I didn't have a nice older one...
It's fine, no one cared. The wands got a bit of a brighten up
As did the base plate
Then it all got put back together
I over-tightened the sodding screws...
Nicer hose end goes onto the hose

And it's done, my 1996 Henry with tools as age-appropriate as I could find, and thank you to all the Numatic collectors who helped me with that task! Bar the not nice hose, it looked quite good!
We dailied it for a bit
Looking at this picture now is astonishing, that self same rug is fully worn out and fit for the bin now, every vacuum skips across it. Back when it was new...
He's come up alright!
//www.youtube.com/watch?v=XMOX0mUBGvQ
I even used him for 12 Vacuums 12 Months 2019!
//www.youtube.com/watch?v=bYNWOKQLjgw
Where I'd found a nice old crevice tool by then!
Thank you for reading!
