Broken DC25 Cyclone Release Catch
« on: September 26, 2011, 01:33:03 am »
This catch seems to be jammed on our DC25.  It won't push in, and I can't remove the canister to empty it - or to fix/replace the release catch.  I can't quite make out how the catch works from looking at it, exploded parts diagrams or the pictures of the replacement catch.  And so I haven't been able to "jimmy" it open.  Can anyone give me a tip on how to get this blasted thing jimmied open??  My house should be this hard to break into!

Try holding the cyclone by the handle and violently jerking it up and down a bit, and see if it works then.

It may be the case you have to break it to get it off and then see what went wrong and fix the bit that broke. They can jam a little sometimes, but they usually come off if you are a little enthusiastic.

Thanks.  I eventually figured out how the latch worked.  The hook on the back of the the catch had me fooled.  I thought it was somehow the operative part of the catch.  But no, it's not.  I'm not sure it does anything.  The part of the latch you need to jimmy is the one that projects out below the push button.  I drilled a small hole through the clear plastic so that I could move that part up with a thin nail, and out popped the canister.  It took me about 6 hours to figure this out - but it did make me a local hero!
