DC04 screech
« on: April 07, 2023, 11:20:17 am »
My clutched DC04 has developed an occasional high pitched screech when vacuuming over the past few weeks. The shrill sound comes and goes but seems to be becoming more regular.  It doesn't occur when the machine is standing up and I'm using the hose with tools. I've had a look underneath and have cleaned the bar etc. It sounds like something is catching on plastic perhaps. I have a donor machine sitting in my garage. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. many thanks

Sounds like the clutch

Definitely the clutch, since the screech is not present until the machine is reclined and the clutch engages.

The problem wasn't the clutch. It was the brush bar. I have a replacement brush bar from my donor machine but the 'new' bar is yellow whereas the original is black. Both machines are clutched and the bars are otherwise identical. The new bar has two additional stops on the ends with a few brushes attached. The plastic stops are approx 8mm cubed. The new bar has the same part number as my old bar. I'm wondering whether this was an upgrade. The internet has pictures of both brush bars as being for DC04s.

I'm also wondering whether to saw the stops off as the old and new brush bars will then be identical. Any advice would be great please. thanks in advance.

You can just swap the caps between rollers
